Knol or HubPages Which is Better?
70Knol: What's it purpose?
It has been widely speculated since the announcement of the Knol project late 2007 that the Knol Project was designed to take on Wikipedia. In fact from what I've seen so far Knol seems much closer in business model to Squidoo or HubPages than Wikipedia.
Knol seems a curious combination of the individual authorship of HubPages and revenue sharing plus a few add-ons such as collaborative authoring tools, peer reviews and proper references which nods towards the academic pretensions of Wikipedia.
So here's my take on differences and similarities of HubPages and Knols
SEO Comparisions
Knol and HubPages URL's
Hubpages: http://hubpages.com/hub/ my - keywords - here
Knol: http://knol.google.com/k/my - name /my - keywords - here /some random string
In my view Hubpages is more SEO friendly there is an awful lot of dilution of my keywords on knol url with the inclusion of my name and the random string of letters at the end. Though I guess we will all be able to have a knol called Credit Cards now!
Do-Follow Links
Knols appear to do-follow all links. However it is not true. Although the popular Firefox SEO add-on shows links as do-follow, they aren't at the top of the pages is this significant piece of code:
meta name = "robots" content="index,nofollow"
Content - What Content is Acceptable in a Knol or a Hub
Neither site wants the usual verboten subjects of drugs, sex, hate and violence all of which are forbidden by the Adsense Terms of Service. Spam, material you don't own is also forbidden as well as malware.
In addition Knol specifically states;
"We don't allow pages that have the primary purpose of redirecting visitors, acting as a bridge page, or driving traffic to another website. We also don't allow Knol pages that have the primary purpose of profiting from displaying ads from any publisher network, such as pages created with little or no unique content that exist only to display ads." Knol content policy
As the site is so new it is unclear what this will actually mean in practice. Knols can be flagged by the community so I suspect what is actually acceptable use will evolve.
Setting up your Profile or Author Page.
Hubpages has a profile, on Knol you have a default knol which is your user name and your equivalent of a profile page. However to add your author photo you have to add you picture to your google profile, which I thought was particularly non-intuitive. You can also add pictures to your personal knol page but only the picture on the google profile will show next to your knols.
Google is on record for stating that Knol is about expert authors putting their names to their writing. It support this they have a verification system which uses either your phone record or credit card to verify your name.
This has a number of issues.
- Verification only works for US addresses.
- Verification requires an exact match of name from credit card or phone account, many authors may use a variation of their name which does not match either of these
- Does not support pseudonyms which have been a standard for authority authors for hundreds of years: neither George Elliot or Louis Carroll would have got themselves verified under the Knol system

Visual Editing: Knol HubPage Comparison
I think that most people who have published elsewhere on the web, find HubPages easy to use. Check out the links for how to layout Hubpages. Hubpages doesn't give you the option to edit HTML or to import content: Knol supports both of these. There are few formatting options which need to be added to Hubpages such as quotes and indents.
Knol is pretty easy to use too. The interface is better than WordPress in my opinion but the save button is hidden in the top left corner - not intuitive! Generally though anyone who has used WordPress/Blogger/Hubpages or similar should have no problem with the editor on Knol.
Allowing use of HTML gives the HTML-literate a wider choice of layout options. I particularly liked how the author of this Barbecue Sauces Knol created the column layout.
Features that Knol has which HubPages lacks.
- Easy referencing of sources along the lines of Wikipedia or other academic writing.
- Supports collaboration ability to have co-authors and for authors to be separate from the owner of the page. A knol can even be collaboratively created by the community along the wikipedia lines.
- Automatic version control - every time the knol is saved a new copy. Ability to have an alternative title Your summary text must be entered encouraging you to write unique content rather than just than just including the first few lines of the article, which is hubpages default.
- Automatic table of contents. Using "title" formats in your knol will give you an automatically generated list of sub-headings near the title.
- Ability to review a knol.
- Ability to rank a knol on a 5 star scale, similar to Squidoo's systems rather than just a thumb up/down on hubpages.
Features that Knol lacks which HubPages has.
- Knol's image support is poor in the visual editor: there is no captioning ability or even the ability to add alt text to images in the visual editor - I assume you can do this via html but I haven't experimented.
- There is no support for videos.
- No support for adding tags
Monetization Options
There is one option for making money on Knol but only one, Adsense. I added my existing Adsense account - which is over a year old and which Adsense has paid out to me from and got a message from Knol: your account is pending approval from Knol which may take 2 weeks! I am not sure what is to approve. The revenue share is 100% to the author though.
The Adsense placement is very poor - one small block on the extreme right hand side of the page.
There is no option to use eBay or Amazon as you can at HubPages. Although in theory you add a link direct to an affiliate sales page I suspect that this will get you banned in fairly short order
Other Missing Features of Knol
- There is no community at Knol, there is no forum.
- There is no way to specifically browse knols within a certain topic.
- You need to use the search function for this.
Once you publish a knol it took mine about an hour or so to be indexed within the knol system. This didn't get it immediately indexed in google though.
There are no statistics - this is a huge gap which hopefully will be rectified quickly - even if its just the option to link to Google Analytics.
The front page appears somewhat static with the same knols appearing on it over the last 24 hours or so. Its unclear what gets a knol to the front page - but I suspect it needs to get some ratings - feel free to rate my Italy Travel knol and any others I have got around to publishing.
Leave a comment below with your experience on knol.
Knol Appears Not to Publish Knols Immediately
Stop Press: I thought my Italy Knol published -but it is not showing under Knol's search unless I am logged in. Hopefully this is just a teething problem with the indexing not keeping up with initial demand.
Further Update:
Yes it was the knol indexing engine struglling under the deluge: my knols are now visible via knol search - though they were visible via google search first!

Yeah I suspect its a deliberate delay to do with the launch of the site - hopefully all that it is. If you have a valid Adsense a/c and you have aproved knol's access to it there is nothing for Knol to approve
Great Hub as usual from you. I went in and had a look, but it doesnt appeal or appear as friendly as it is here at hubs. Didnt see any real help like we can ask for here. I will be staying here at least until I get back again. Thanks for your research Lissie.
Hi. This is my first time to encounter knol. Why would hubbers want to write to many sites? I'm just curious. They're all just using google adsense.
Hi Elieen - the help is somewhat lacking -to be honest the launch looks pretty amateurish - or evern worse they let the techies loose and forgot to write the help documentation properly!
BeastsMe - I want as many places to write where I can get a backlink (thats a link with a do-follow) to my sites. Then my sites will get more PR and more authority from Google and therefore rank better in the search engines when someone searchs for "hubpages knol comparision" for example :-) Although I enjoy writing for fun I am trying to make a living doing this LOL
Lissie, Lissie, Lissie, what are you trying to do to me. I finally get my first Hub up, then I discover you are talking about Knols. I bet you have 101 of those as well by the end of the week, lol.
Do you ever sleep? Maybe you have learnt to type and snooze at the same time?
Great Hub by the way. Now I have seen what a real hub looks like, it's back to the drawing board for me.
Take Care - John
LOL John- I am trend Hubbing you know - just in case Knols go hot, hot, hot I will be top of the serps - in fact I already am LOL! I won't be doing 2 knols until the buggers show my knols to those who are not logged into to knol to see them!
Oh and we never sleep down under you know!
Hi Lissie, this is a really informative hub, thanks for putting it together. As you know, I've already ventured into knols and don't particularly like what I see there. With links no-followed, there is not a lot of point to them from my perspective - my time writing would be better spent creating new hubs or my own hosted sites. But they are also new and experiencing teething problems.
One thing that is good is that you can have whatever keyword you want in your title, so that means no need to gallop through the staring gate to scramble for the best ones! I'll hang back now and see if anything changes.
Terry
Wow, knols. OMG I can't keep up. I'm going to check it out, thank you so much for writing about it. My freelance bids at elance have been going nowhere the last couple of weeks, so I guess I better get better at generating Adsense revenue. Argh. I don't know. I'm overwhelmed already just thinking about it. Thanks Lissie for a great hub.
Hi Terry - well my knol got indexed in Google within a few hours - still waiting on the actual knol search though LOL - so they might be of some use for getting a site indexed?
PG: I have you tried constant content - its potentially a lot better money than Adsense - I dont think knol is going to be good for Adsense the placement is rubbish- and as knol doesn't get any money from it why would they bother changing it!
I had a look at Knols last night, just briefly. Thanks for the run down, Lissie, you saved me a lot of time, My biggest gripe is that we can't write under a pseud. I don't want my real name plastered all over the Internet. Now that I have an account there, I think I'll just sit back and watch for the moment. I'm thinking that the Google owned Blogger might be more useful for backlinks, if that is what you are after, than Knols. At least at the moment, given what you've said here.
I can't decide whether I should make a real effort to use knol's too or not. I am afraid with google controlling them that they could end up dominating the search engine rankings.
I cann't give a try to knol, infact im stuck to hubpages and its the best place for me as for many others. When i joined hubpages i left squiddo and i like the simplicity of hubpages.
THIS MAKES A GOOD READING ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE IN HUBPAGES AND KNOL
Nice work Lissie, you have pointed out all the major differences. One more thing I found out was there is no seperate comment moderation tab where one could moderate commments on all the knols at the same time.
Lissie, thanks for putting Knol into a perspective for your HubPages readers. I know my time is limited, and from your review, I will not pursue Knol for now, but I will watch Knol's development.
Thanks for saving me a LOT of time.
Sally
Lissie, hadn't heard of knols, but after checking it out I'm not too crazy about it. That's not to say I won't give it a try, but it's not at the top of my to-do list. It has too much of a tradtionial webpage/textbook feel to it for me. The look may have been great a few years ago, but the online community has advanced a lot.
I think Hubpages is better. I also looked at qassia (thanks to you) and Squidoo, but I'm not too crazy about them either. I believe I've found my home with HubPages, I love everything about it. Plus I would go crazy trying to manage so many accounts with on top of everything else. I'm finding it challenging enough to get my hub ideas on to paper (well, virtual paper) with 2 young children at home with me ALL day ;)
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks everyone for your comments! I am now happy that my first knol is showing on knol search and on google. I also got comments and some suggested revisions but I didn't know because there is no notify function that I can find!
I think there is a big issue deciding which and how many places to write on the internet! I am not too sure that I have the answer to that one. One of things that I like about knol is that it does look a little academic or official or less commercial. That might mean its a good place to write pieces that I want to use as reference examples for my writing.
Lizzie , I was slowly thinking about knol,
You have put me off.
Please let me know when you are 100 satisfied I might go on the road then.
Thank you
I think knol will need a month or 2 to settle down. I really don't see how anyone is giong to make much money if they don't change their add placement - but for more "formal" articles I quite like the layout
There's a lot of talk about how google is favoring their Knol results in the search engines already!
Interesting stuff
Great comparision post. I just got word of knol and after checking the so call do follow links it appears that they are not do follow. Instead the ones that have seen so far are no follow. This is a huge blow to those wanting to use it for SEO purposes.
KNOL what does that stand for? This is a very nice hub. This is what hubs should be.
knol=unit of knowledge apparently!
There is so much to learn on Hub pages. And you are a great researcher.
I like the write I do not have the time to check out KNOL as yet still trying to fit into hub pages
I had the same impression you did about Knol - it looked more like a cross between Hubpages and Wikipedia, than a clone of Wikipedia. Nevertheless only time will tell where Knol will be months from now. Good Hub!
Corrisa
thanks for the comparisons
I like 100%. But 100% of foo is , well foo.
Thanks for doing the research and making it easy to understand!
Hi Lissie - thanks for much for this info. I just checked out Knol today, and was totally overwhelmed. I think I'll wait before signing up - but I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.
Well it appears that I am finally getting 2 whole Adsense ads showing so yes I think 100% there is worth a lot less than 60% here! I also see the front page has the same boring collection of obsucre diseases that it had when the site was launched - not impressed!
Hi Lissie, thanks for this review. It keeps us abreast with whats new in the internet. Will come back here to see how knol is going along... :)
Great information! I've never heard of Knol before, but I can tell from your review that I'm likely not missing much. I appreciate you taking the time to pick out all the pro's and con's for each site. :)
Knol seems to be for Professionals like Doctors, and researchers. Put Squidoo in the mix and I'll vote! lol
nteresting comment Veronica - those medical articles were there when they initially launched and are still on the front page - its not very appealing for the rest of us is it! To be honest Iwas going to write a squidoo/knol lens over on squidoo - but I lost interest!
Thanks for the heads up on the no-follow thing. Just checked some links, and sure enough they're no-follow...
I have just set up on Knol and it appears that I have linked to both Adsense and Analytics already.
doesn't sound like knol is very user friendly and not SEO functional at all...why bother giving google your content for free, when you make money on squidoo, personally I am going with squidoo.
Cool that I found this!!
Thanks.

Yes, I got the same thing that my adsense could take up to 2 weeks to be approved.
Anyway, this is a great hub. Thanks for investigating :)
