Acne
The common acne, also called acne vulgaris, is often associated with puberty since during that stage teenagers produce more sex hormones which stimulate sebaceous gland to produce excessive amount of sebum. The cell build up caused by extra oil in the skin stick to the surface of the skin and start lining on the inside of the follicles. Consequently, they form small impaction called microcomedo. At first these microcomedones are not visible; however, they continue to retain more dead cells, sebum, and bacteria until they become visible in the form of acne.
The bacteria that causes acne is called anaerobic (grow and survive where there is no oxygen). These bacteria are always present in the follicles in small numbers and oxygen prevents them from reproducing. If the follicle becomes blocked, oxygen cannot circulate and the bacteria increase.
Treatments for Acne
Benzoyl Peroxide
This product works by peeling off excess cell buildup, temporarily dilating the follicles, and breaking up follicles impactions and debris. It also releases oxygen in the follicles to help kill the bacteria. There are several strength of this product which are for mild to severe acne. Unfortunately many people are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide and it is important to know that this product has bleach characteristics and could bleach fabric and hair if contact is made. This product dries the skin and visible tightening and peeling of skin may occur.
Salicylic Acid
This product is known to be the mildest of the drying agents and is ideal for use on older, drier skin types. It usually comes in lotion form and a lot of companies include it in their moisturizers for problem skin. Salicylic acid is from the family of aspirin and those allergic to aspirin should avoid the oral form of salicylic acid altogether. Also for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid the use of this product in general.
Glycolic and Alphahydroxy acids
Alphahydroxy acid at 8 to 10 percent in gel base is very effective in removing impactions. This product could be combined with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to treat acne and clogged skin. This product is also helpful in preventing acne by keeping follicles clear of cell buildup and preventing comedones and other acne lesions.
Sulfur and Resorcinol
These two ingredients are usually combined in an acne-drying product in the form of a gel, cream, clay mask or clay for spot treatment. They are not quit as aggressive as benzoyl peroxide and are less irritating. It is recommended to test a small area first when using this product to make sure you are not allergic.
For those who are using peeling agents to treat acne, use of sunscreen is highly recommended since these skins are not immune from sun damage.
Sometimes dermatologists prescribe drugs for acne treatment. One of these prescriptions is Tretinoin (Retin-A) which is vitamin A acid. This prescription should not be used with other acne products. It is not unusual for people who use this product to start seeing flaking, dry skin, redness, irritation and slight discomfort. People who are treating their acne with Retin-A should avoid high alcohol and fragranced products. They should eliminate essential oils from their regime since it might cause further irritation. The use of sunscreen is a must for these people as the skin becomes extra sensitive to sun light. No scrubs should be used and all stripping cleansers, soaps and abrasives should be avoided. Retin-A users should avoid waxing, enzyme treatment, excessive massage, and heavy and tick creams. The oral cousin of retinoic acid is called accutane and it is important to remember that the use of both products is dangerous during pregnancy as it causes birth defects.
