These are kolams drawn by the neighbour's maid every morning. These designs are supposed to be auspicious and invite the goddess of prosperity into the house. A Hindu house in Tamilnadu, which is a state in South India, is never without a kolam. No kolam before the front step coould mean illness or death or that the family is on vacation or something.

This lady is not frightfully traditional. She draws her kolams with coloured chalks. The traditional medium is rice powder.

What a nice tradition! Why did you say it was the neighbors maid that drew the Kolams. Does it mean that my maid would go to draw on the next doors neighbors front step???

Please write more about your traditions . regards Zsuzsy
