Borneo's Star City

Kuching is the capital of Sarawak, which is the largest state in Malaysia. It lies on the island of Borneo. Kuching is a good place to use as a base for exploring the famous natural beauty of Borneo. A smallish city, it is easy to get around and has enough to do to keep visitors occupied for several days or longer.

Sarawak Museum hosts exhibits that offer some insight into the peoples and cultures of Borneo. This place is a must for trekkers who are heading out into the wilder parts of the island.

While travel by river is necessary in outer lying areas, there are boat and kayak tours of the city of Kuching as well. Boat tours are organized for areas inside the city and along the coast.

For a bit of nature near town, head to Kubah Park, forty minutes outside the city. The beautiful waterfalls and jungle trails make this a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Mount Santubong, also near Kuching, offers a more challenging trek. There are some fabulous views along the well-marked and maintained trails to the summit.

Back in the city, the waterfront area of Taman Sri Sarawak offers some good places to eat and drink. The Open Air Market on (where else) Market Street serves up some excellent local cuisine at cheap prices. If you are familiar with Malay food, this is the place to go. If you are not, this is the place to learn. Chinatown, which is located smack in the middle of Kuching, is home to some more great eateries and is probably the most happening nightlife area in town.

India Street (Jalan India) is home to some of the city’s more colorful markets. Because most tourist places are near the waterfront, these markets have a mostly local flavor. All along Jalan India, motorized vehicles are not allowed, making this one of the better places in town to wander. The shopping along the waterfront is also good, if a bit touristy and not as authentic an experience. If you happen to be in town on Sunday, check out Pasar Minggu, or Sunday Market. It actually begins on Saturday afternoon and closed at noon-ish on Sunday. This is one of the best-known markets amongst the local population. People come here from all over the city to get the freshest of the fresh food. It is crowded, but an experience worth having for the sights as much as the shopping.

Kuching is a great place to experience both urban charms and natural beauty.
