This food contains salt, choline chloride, potassium chloride and dried cheese? I thought these things weren't good for cats.

Mr,

You are exactly right that many of the contents of this product are not good for cats or other pets. Due to all the harmful ingredients being included in pet food I have had to come up with a new rating system called the Pet Food Danger Gauge. This pet food review was written before the recalls of 2007 began. Since the pet food companies have refused to improve the quality of the products they produce I have had to revise the review system.

Great question!

Susan

Why did this food escape the -1 for having chicken fat? Is it a different kind of chicken fat or am I just not reading the other reviews correctly?

You also docked EVO points for having microbials, the same things in this ingredients list. Also Egg ("egg (from what?)")

Oh no! It has Copper Sulfate in it!!! Wikipedia says the main use for this is a pesticide!!!

Your reviews are, in my opinion, harmful. I agree with the generalities: corn gluten as a main ingredient is bad, etc. But I think most of your reasoning is unsound, and it is beyond comprehension why you'd dock the same amount of points for something like using corn as the main protein component vs. your bizarre interpretation of "Animal Digest". According to your paranoid rating scale, this product should have gotten 4/10 AT BEST.

Do you have ANY progessional knowledge of animal nutrition?

What a joke these reviews are. I hope no one ever takes them seriously.

Who, exactly, is Susan Peters anyway? Seems like she doesn't have much of a concept of general animal nutrition or holistic nutrition. The ratings scales are harmful to those seeking a good food for their pet. The recalls were a terrible time for all of us, but there's no reason to promote fear among the pet-loving community. Caregivers need to read labels, ensure they are comfortable with the ingredients, make sure their pets aren't having bad reactions to the foods and see their vet once a year. To illustrate: my cats all had horrible, greasy fur after consuming Wellness canned products, a pricey food considered "high-end." I switched to Nature's Variety and voila, nice, soft, shiny fur. Mom's cats do very well on Friskies, mine don't. The proof is in the pudding. Susan -- give it up.

Susan,

With complete sincerity, please reconsider giving any further opinions on pet foods. Your indecisive evaluations on pet food ingredients are very confusing to say the least... they don't make sense. For example, under: Cat Food Review- Cat Food Ratings Dry or Bagged 87 (don't know what the '87' means in this title?) you give Kumpi Kat All Life Stages a 10/10 and say: "Looks like a winner to me!". On the same page (Cat Food Review) just below the "Kumpi Kat All Life Stages 10/10" is listed: Kumpi Kat All Life Stages cat food review 20/30, 67% safe. When you click onto that one the page opens up with "Kumpi Kat All Life Stages Food Cat Food 75" (again, don't know what the 75 means in this title?). After reading your comment "Looks like a winner to me!" I read in this review (on the very same cat food) that it is considered, in your opinion, 67% safe "dangerous and toxic to pets". How can the same food be both dangerous and toxic to pets yet a "winner" in your opinion? It's hard enough for pet owners to do serious research on pet foods without coming across websites like yours that do more harm than good. Giving two opposite opinions on the very same pet food, no matter your reasons, is NOT what consumers are looking for. We want to know which foods are safe and healthy and which ones are not, period. I have tried to find your credentials on line but, the only thing I found is that you are a pet groomer. I would love to take your advice on grooming tools, shampoos and the like... but, why do you evaluate pet food ingredients? You probably will not post my comment and I truly don't expect you to. I just hope you understand how serious "we" are in looking for genuine advice. Unless you are a certified animal nutritionist or licensed veterinarian I would never consider giving people advice on pet food ingredients.

Sincerely,

Lynn

Susan,

Since I wrote my post above, I have researched what HubPages is all about. Now I understand what your purpose is. It is to earn money. That is very sad and frustrating because there are sooo many sincere and genuine pet owners seeking advice on healthy pet foods. What frustrates me is seeing how these people are hanging on to your every word as if you are a licensed or certified pet nutritionist. I can't even bring myself to type too much here on this site because certain words I use will highlight and create an advertisement... just what you need to generate more money, amazing! For everyone reading this, Susan is earning money everytime someone is reading her HubPages. The confusion she causes makes people search all over her pages for a clearer understanding, in turn, upping her page counts and points and ultimately her income. Is that what the numbers mean in the upper right corner of all your pages, your "page count"? People, please google "hubpages" and learn what being a "hub author" is all about. I know tons of people, like myself, will be greatly disappointed. I was trusting Susan Peters advice for three days while researching a good pet food until I noticed a pattern of inconsistency in her ratings; a red flag went up... my husband says she's a grand illusionist, I say stick to pet grooming and if that isn't bringing you enough income try getting a second job. Now, after being deceived for three days, I will be researching healthy pet foods from legitimate pet "nutritionists"... there's a word that will bring you all an ad to be annoyed with. What a shame that everything in life seems to revolve around making a buck.

Kaci,

You are very welcomed. If I can help just one person be aware of Susan Peters' motive here at "hubpages", which is money, I'm happy. I've learned that if you click onto any of the numerous Ads that are placed on each page, that is how a "hub author" earns their money. More importantly, I just have to add, please stay far away from any Nutro products if you are searching for a safe and healthy pet food. This company is truly killing our pets and getting away with it. You can find info all over the internet when you search the dangers of Nutro pet foods. It has also recently been on the news. Please spread the word to others about Hubpages and how it's all about earning money by posting your "opinions", not facts, and also about Nutro. Genuine pet parents need to stick together by spreading the word to each other. I wish all the best to you and your pets!

Thats all fine and good but couldn't you have mentioned what you found out? What Freaking cat food is best. Ya she's making a buck, duh, and ya I agree it shouldnt be all about money, but right now i'd pay for someone to just freaking find a decent website to get this info from. Even the holistic petstores and vets seem clueless, WTF???

This food contains Menhaden, which is a small fish at the base of the food chain in Chesapeake Bay. The fish are being exterminated for cat food, and fish higher up the food chain are starving as a result. The ecosystem of the Bay is changing. Do not buy any cat food with menhaden or 'ocean fish' in it!

I feed my cat Acana Prairie and Go Natural and she thrives on both. Neither one contains menhaden or any grains.

is there a reputable site anywhere to evaluate the least harmful food for our pets. I was following this hook, line and sinker until I got here.

Now, I'm lost. Any advice on the best cat food... I just changed my dog's food to Artemis which I feel is an excellent food. I found a site I thought was great. It was there one day and gone the next. I read about Artemis on that site and had to order it online.

Thanks!
