Bali's Big Beach

Some of the old hands will tell new visitors what Bali used to be like “back in the day”. What was once a surfer’s paradise is now a mass of concrete where the tourist trade is plied to excess. Kuta Beach is now more resort town than undiscovered surf spot. However, the conditions that made it so attractive to early surfers remain. The waves and the lack of dangerous rocks or coral under the water make for good surfing experiences. It is not a bad idea for novice surfers or those who are merely curious about the sport to give it a try on Kuta. The sheer amount of tourists means that surfing instructors are in high demand. It is easy to find someone catering to your experience level. It is also relatively cheap. Some of the courses can last up to a week. Once you get good enough, some schools even provide transport to other surf sports around the island. All of this is at a cost, but it does not have to be a very steep one. You can also inquire along the beach. Some of the locals who rent surfing gear might be able to introduce you to an instructor, or even provide a lesson themselves.

During the summer, Kuta’s streets and beaches are a mass of people. However, the beach remains relatively clean. If you are willing to spend the day wandering, you might be able to find a quiet spot of white sand to stretch out on.

Nightlife has continued on Kuta, though security is now as tight as an airport around the nightlife areas. This is the biggest party scene in Bali, perhaps in all of Indonesia. Simply choose your price range and company and spend the evening knocking back a few drinks.

Shopping in Kuta is also not bad. Discovery shopping mall is a good place to browse. Most vendors in small shops and on the beach will overcharge you, so be prepared to bargain if you have your heart set on a certain t-shirt or trinket.

Food is cheap and delicious. Local specialties are served up and all kinds of international cuisine are available, including fast food.

Kuta is not the place to experience the culture of Bali. It is a place to enjoy sand, surf, and socialize with other tourists. If you happen to be a surfing novice, Kuta offers a great place to get started in the sport.
