The first step you should take is to open the LCD Monitor cover. You have to be careful when you do this to not scratch the plastic casing. If you accidentally scratch the inside of the screen, it could leave a permanent mark. Once you have removed the cover, depending on what kind of monitor you have, you might need to remove another four screws (two at each side) in order to be able to take out the power supply. Other LCD Monitors are easier to get at, and as soon as you remove the cover, you can take out the power supply.

The next step is to diagnose what is wrong. Sometimes, the problem is fairly obvious. One common problem is that the filter capacitors have a slight bulge on top of them, meaning that they are not functioning properly. If you do not have your own collection of spare parts, you could order the part you need online, or pick up a junked monitor at a thrift store that is similar to yours in order to get the right part. Once you find an identical capacitor, simply replace the old one.

If switching out the capacitors does not work, you can also try replacing the whole power supply. Once again, this only works if you have a bunch of extra old computer parts lying around. Simply strip another power supply down to everything that you need. Most monitor power supplies have six connections, making it easy to switch one power supply for another.
