LG SteamWashers TROMM Front-Load SteamWasher with 4.0 Cu. Ft. Capacity, 9 Wash Programs & SteamFresh Technology: I and II
I gleaned most of the following information from an appliance afficianado/salesman Chuck Diehl, and I am repeating it here with his permission.
First of all, the LG Steam Washing Machines I and II, are attractive.
There is a difference between the two washing machines. The SteamWasher I has a 1300RPM spin, an electronic readout showing functions and time remaining in the cycles, an interior drum light that may be turned on during the cycle without opening the door, a handheld monitor to check the program and where it stands anywhere you are at that time at home or away, and a color availability of midnight blue or snowcrest white. The price is $1599 in colors or $1499 in white. The matching dryer is $1199 (electric) $1269 (gas) in colors or 1099 (electric)$1169 (gas) in white. The Steam Washer II does not have the electronic readout and only spins 1200 RPMs. It is available in Cherry Red or Snowcrest White and retails for $1399 in colors or $1299 in white and the matching dryers are $999 (electric) $1059 (gas) in colors or $899 (electric) $959 (gas) in white. The monitor may be used as far away as possible. It is a small computer and sends as well as receives messages from and to the washer/dryer.You could be in Vancouver and want to start a cycle going in the washer (I don't know why anyone would need to do that!)or maybe the dryer. Who knows? It is a great sales point though and really, being a freebie, and retailing for almost $300, LG has it in the bag. The quality on the Steam Washer II is no less than the SteamWasher I; it's only a special model LG created for The Home Depot to keep them set apart from Best Buy, Lowes, Sears and other competitive dealers who may be pushing the SteamWasher IIs.The color availability as well as the price difference is the "method of madness"used to sell the product.
The battles of American brands as well as the continuation of their failures due to their pompous and arrogant behavior stemming from quality control to customer satisfaction has enabled the foreign trade companies to enter our market and basically take over.It really isn't their fault. It's our own ignorance and pride that has created this. Chuick Diehl's honest opinion? He likes it. Anybody who goes to work to build a good, dependable product and takes pride in the way it operates and looks will triumph.
Chuck says:
"George, you CAN NOT even hear these operate!!!! I have them in operation at work and when customers walk by and see they're on, they stop dead in their tracks and can't believe their eyes and ears. That's when I step in and sell them. We are the only Home Depot store that doesn't receive the problem calls from angry customers who buy the LG's.These are the customers who either do not read the instructions or follow through on them afterwords and the ones who aren't educated buy the salespeople who they dealt with on how these operate and how to maintain them. I may spend a little more time with my customers but theyalways seem to be the ones who come back to brag and thank me for "converting" them to a much more conservative, environmentally safe/friendly appliance that is not only a great performer but also fun to watch. It happens almost four times a week.Usually, they arrive when I am with another customer talking about the same product.Their response is nothing but assurance to the current customer(s) that all I have told them so far is rock solid truth. The ball is now in their park."Will that be cash or charge? -- Would you like to put this on your Home Depot account? -- You don't have one? -- That's great! I can run your credit through and get you a temporary one in 5 minutes and if you qualify, I'll take an additional 10% off your purchase of up to $2,000 today and give you 12 months 0% interest! So what day did you say you'd like these delivered?"
The rest is history. That's how it works. The salesman made the customers not only happy by sharing with them his knowledge in a positive manor how to operate this new washer/dryer but also saved them a bundle by opening an account and taking 10% off ($200) and giving them 12 months 0% interest.Chuck says that happens every day.

I Want To Read Your Comments and Questions
To jreitz,
This may be more than you want to know, but then you asked!
The first issue is with detergent. Some customers still after spending all that money refuse to measure detergent and still buy what's on sale. Fortunately ,the LGs have fuzzy logic and are able to withstand this abuse by emptying the sudsy water and refilling the machine untill the suds are at the right level. However, this can take away the strength of the detergent and retard the stain removal. That's why it's best to stay with the HE line of low sudsing detergents.
Overstuffing them to the gills is also another problem as well as trying to wash just one piece. As with any washer, clothes should be properly separated as to type and dirt level: Whites, colorfast, non colorfast, delicate, permanent press, knits. All these need to be done separately.Towels should always be done with nothing but other towels.Keep them away from other clothes because the fabric has a tendency of shedding into other fibers and can be easily seen under a black light.Of course, separate them as you would the clothes, whites with whites colors with colors.Dark colors like red, blue, green and purple have a tendancy to bleed out of towels (fade)and can cause a real disaster when washed with diferent colors. Try to keep them separate or stay with the pastels.
It's o.k. to wash washable shoes. Just be sure you wash them with the towels. This way,it helps keep the load balanced and the shoes get a lot cleaner. Either air dry them outside or use the no-tumble drying rack that the LG dryers come with to dry them separately. When you let tennis shoes tumble in a clothes dryer, it can ruin the drum and the idler pullies that it rests on. The constant thumping of shoes onto these parts is way too agressive for any dryer to handle it without any damage occuring. The washer can easily take the abuse but not the dryer.
Whitest whites???Rotted out fabrics????Too much chlorine bleach is yet another problem that sho
I don't know why all of my writing didn't show up above. Too much chlorine bleach can weaken fabrics. These washers, like most front loaders automatically adjust the amount of the water to the load. And, the amount of water goes just a little beyond making the clothes wet. Too much chlorine bleach (say, the maximum amount allowed by the machine for a maximum size load) for a very small load may lead to weakened fabrics.
I have read a lot of reviews and comments about Bosch and LG. The LG Steam Washer is currently at the top of the list. One concern that I have is that, since there are only two of us, we tend to have small loads yet I really like to be able to wash our pillows and comforters. You made a comment about washing one piece of clothing - that may actually happen occassionally at my house. An article of clothing that needs separate handling. Is this something that will cause problems with the LG? Also, I have seen some complaints about water in the bottom of the machine underneath the tub. This, of course causes, mildrew smells in the clothing. Is this a problem LG has?
JM Scott,
The one piece of clothing, if it is small, probably won't be a problem. The machine automatically adjusts for the proper amount of water. As in all washing machines, part of the cleaning action results from the material rubbing against material, and if there is just one item in the washer, there will probably be less rubbing and therefore less efficient cleaning (this would happen with any washing machine -- front or top loader). Mildew in the front loader Maytag Neptune was a problem years ago. Maytag was able to redesign a part that eliminated the mildew. I am not aware of a problem about water remaining under the tub and causing mildew, but I will check with my LG friend. I'll post what I learn as another comment.
What HE brands of detergent do you recommend? We use ALL clear and free. Please email me!!!! dnix2006@yahoo.com
We use the Kirkland Signature Liquid HE Laundry detergent from Costco most of the time. We have softened water, and I use the amount for a large load. We have also used the liquid HE brands Gain, Wisk and Tide. Usually consumer organizations will top rate Tide, but I must say that I haven't been able to tell the difference. I do not like granular detergent because once I saw the inside of the outer tub of our front loader when we were using powder detergent, and quite a bit had crusted --- an stayed in the outer tub (something most people never see).
I will be going to the K.B.I.S. (Kitchen and Bath Industrial Show)the first week of may to see the new products (major appliances)out for show. When I return,I'll have some more information on new products coming out next fall.My friend,Atul, the owner and president of Equator Corporation will be there and has asked my prescence to be in his company during the show.I was happy to ablodge.

What are some examples of the kind of angry calls the other Home Depots receive? What are some quirks of the LG that a potential buyer might be interested in?
