Swimming pools have long been an icon of those who have time to bask in the luxuries afforded by success. Society has attached the image of personal swimming pools to the successful and perhaps well to do. But pools are becoming more available to the everyday man. If you live in an area known for its hot weather, swimming pools are probably common place. They are a fun and healthy way to stay cool. Swimming pools can be a great investment in your family's health, especially if you spend a lot of time swimming. The problem is, no one likes to jump into a pool that is freezing cold, and if you live in an area not so well known for sweltering heat, you probably have a short summer, and even shorter swimming season. That doesn't make it fun for anyone, everyone would love to have their swimming season extended, or even existent. Which is where pool heaters become relevant. There are all sorts of options out there when it comes to you keeping your pool warm enough to swim in, everything from electric to solar or gas heaters are on the market and effectively doing the job.

Gas pool heaters are the most common. In specific, propane pool heaters, are considered perhaps the best and most cost efficient way to heat your pool. Gas heaters are less expensive in the current market, they can heat greater amounts of water faster than electric pool heaters. Electric pool heaters are generally based on a heat pump design. Similar to certain home heating systems, electric pool heaters use the air outside, heats freon gas which is compressed to raise the temperature even higher. This hot gas is sent to a heat exchanger and is transferred to the pool water which is cycled through the pool. A third option, less common, but perhaps the most cost efficient of all, Solar Pool Heaters. These work using- you guessed it- the suns free energy to heat the pool. You don't have to pay the sun, and it will do the work for you any day it shines, which in case you haven't noticed, is every day. You can build one of these pool heating pumps yourself, for very reasonable prices, but you can't forget to purchase the pump that will circulate the water through the solar pool heater. Most people use an electric pump to move the water, which means that yes, you are going to still have to pay for your pump to work.

Another great trick many pool owners don't know is that using a solar pool cover will actually cut down the cost of heating your pool with a pool heat pump. There are lots of options for keeping your pool swimmable, doing the research will always benefit you. Look into what you will need for your pool size, and be aware that having a specialist talk with you about your specific needs will always be the easiest and most efficient way to make suer you get the best pump for your pool. The thing is, having a pool heat pump for your pool at home means that you really can swim whenever you want, and you will be able to keep your pool running long before and after the rest of the public patrons have to head in doors.

A few of our older residents remember the two-story white frame house that once stood on W. 5th St., not far from Market St., with the huge yellow tomcat slumbering in the window, between the glass panes and the fragile lace curtains.
