For those not familiar with the LSAT, it is completely different than any other standardized test for it does not rely on accumulated knowledge to answer the questions. In fact, going into the test with too many personal opinions about issues and how the world operates can be detrimental to taking this exam.

When you take the Law School Admission Test, you have to go into each test with a tabula rasa, a clear mind, because the questions on the exam have to be handled individually. The main rule that others will tell you is that each question has to be looked at individually and everything discussed within that argument is to be taken for fact no matter how much it differs with what you understand and believe. That is where too many people who take the LSAT go wrong because the exam will play on your assumptions and cause you to answer incorrectly.

That is why getting a decent test preparation course is vital to taking this test. If you have no background in logical reasoning theory, than you will do poorly and not receive the grade you seek. Companies like TestMasters specialize in teaching how to get into the minds of those who create the LSAT so that you are prepared to breakdown any question, past or present, and get at the logical flaw in the argument.

What is the LSAT?

The most important part of getting into law school is not your GPA, but the score you get on the Law School Admission Test. Many pre-law students know that this exam is not easier and seek out the help of test preparation courses that will teach them the basics of logical theory.

The point range for scores is on a scale of 120 to 180. What is interesting is that on any given exam, the results are always the same:

** 10% of those who take the test score 162 or above

** 20% score 142 or below

** 70% fall between 142 and 162

So how do these figures translate into whether or not you go off to Harvard or Berkeley?

Well if you happen to score below a 150, your chance of getting into law school is probably not going to happen because there is too much competition from others trying to get into law and colleges look for those who score in the top ten percent. If you happen to score over a 165, there is a good chance that you will have law colleges contending over you and you will be able to select the school of your choice.

When a student takes the LSAT, they should be conscious of the types of questions on the test. The examination is broken down into five parts. This is further broken down into three types known as logical reasoning, reading comprehension, and logic games. Also on every test, you will have at least two logical reasoning sections with a possibility of a third if it is also the experimental.

LSAT Preparation Courses

There are several companies that claim to offer superior LSAT prep courses but only a few stand out among the herd. When choosing a company or a private tutor, always make sure that the people who are teaching you have actually scored in the top 98% of an actual administered LSAT and have had some experience in teaching the material.

Just because someone scores high, it does not guarantee that they can teach the material.

Below, I have given a review on some of the best Law School Admission Test preparation courses in America.

TestMasters

Robin Singh’s California-based TestMasters, not be confused with Texas-based TestMasters, claims to be “the world’s leading provider of quality LSAT preparation” and to all those involved in the billion dollar industry of LSAT test preparation there is no more of an expert than Robin Singh.

Having score twelve perfects on the LSAT, Robin Singh has taken TestMasters to the third spot in the industry right behind Kaplan and the Princeton Review. But for content and results, TestMasters has no competition.

For one, TestMasters has the highest hours of class time with over 80 hours of in classroom instruction that meets twice a week. All of the instructors go through a brutal week long extensive training session where they are judged daily on performance. But before they get that far, they must have scored in the 98th percentile on an actual LSAT administered test.

Kaplan

Kaplan is the oldest and largest test preparation company in the world. Founded in 1938 by Stanley Kaplan, Kaplan is an international giant that specializes in all forms of education with programs in higher education, professional training courses, test prep, and other services in instruction all the way down to kindergarten.

Kaplan has three LSAT test prep course with various levels of intensity. Some in the industry believe this was done to compete with TestMasters intense 80 hour program.

At the bottom level, Kaplan offers their basic LSAT preparation class with 35 classroom hours and 16 testing hours.

The next level called Kaplan LSAT Advanced offers 56 hours of classroom instruction with 24 testing hours. Also, this level has one criterion for students that they need a 158 or higher on a previous LSAT diagnostic. This is done to create different levels of learning as most advanced students get irritated with being in a classroom with students who don’t understand logical reasoning.

The third level called LSAT Extreme includes 85 classroom hours and 24 testing hours. Also, the instructors need to place in the 95th percentile on the LSAT.

Blueprint Review

One of the newest competitors in the billion dollar industry of LSAT test preparation courses, Blueprint has quickly grown into a quality company despite recent litigation from TestMasters.

Blueprint was founded in 2005 by a group of former TestMasters instructors with a simple, yet revolutionary idea that people will learn more if they're interested and engaged in the material. Blueprint instructors not only teach the LSAT logic theory but do it in a relaxed atmosphere that promotes interaction among students. Some students might find this distracting, but most of Blueprint’s customers enjoy the learning experience.

Blueprint advertises the highest score increase in the country and attribute their incredibly high score increases to the length of their classes, the strength of their curriculum, and the instruction of their teachers.

Blueprint currently claims to have the longest course in the country with 100 classroom lecture hours.  Blueprint also claims that their questions are drawn almost exclusively from post-2000 LSATs.

Their instructors have all scored 170 or higher on the actual LSAT. They also undergo a rigorous training session that ensures they can teach the concepts well. Perhaps most importantly, they are carefully screened for personality to find out if they are both knowledgeable and engaging.

Despite a long lawsuit with TestMasters over allegations that Blueprint stole their course material form Robin Singh, Blueprint survived the lawsuit and is now focused on being the best when it comes to LSAT test preparation.

Registering for the LSAT

Whether you study yourself, hire a private tutor, or use a LSAT test prep course, you will still have to sign up to take the actual test yourself.

It is always a good idea to sign up months in advance as test centers tend to fill up quickly. For more information on signing up for the test, visit www.lsac.org .
