As the orchestra’s principal clarinetist, Collado normally spends her drive through rush-hour traffic thinking about a tricky solo in a Brahms symphony or Stravinsky ballet. These days she thinks about her role as “Mimi,” the femme fatale in Bela Bartok’s “Miraculous Mandarin.” Collado doesn’t have to dress or act the part. She’ll be wearing her usual concert clothing and sitting in the center of the woodwinds, as always. Instead, Bartok asks her to deliver three virtuosic and grueling clarinet cadenzas — he calls them “dances of deception” — in order to tell Mimi’s [...] - http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/oct/25/the-goal-telling-stories-that-apply-to-today/?arts
