Lakes Entrance

Lakes Entrance is my favorite Holiday spot and perhaps one day it may be a Sea Change and I will live there permanently.

Lakes Entrance is a tourist resort and fishing port in eastern Victoria, Australia.

Lakes Entrance is situated roughly 320 kilometres east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway near a managed, man-made channel connecting the Gippsland Lakes to the Bass Strait. At the 2006 census, Lakes Entrance had a population of 4093. The township was originally named Cunninghame, the Post Office of that name opening on 5 February 1870. It was renamed Lakes Entrance on 1 January 1915. The locals loving just call it "The Lakes"

Other place close by are Paynesville and Metung.

Approaching Lakes Entrance

After a very easy drive from Melbourne , it takes about 3 and a half hours from Melbourne , but more if you want to stop and have a meal at Traralgon or Bairnsdale just to name two of the towns you drive through.

When you arrive in the Lakes you are confronted by one of the most beautiful vistas of the Lakes and rolling Ocean you could see anywhere. I have included a photo I took on one of my visits from the "look out" just up from Lakes Entrance.

On a clear day , from the lookout you can see the Oil Rigs on the horizon.

From this lookout it is just a short drive , about 1 Km down hill to the little township of Lakes Entrance.

Arriving in Lakes Entrance

After you drive down from the lookout you cross over the North Arm bridge and hit the main street which is The Esplanade

Sculptures

The Esplanade

The main road "The Esplanade" runs along the shoreline of the Cunninghame Arm inlet, with marinas, docks for the fishing trawlers, attractive gardens and walkways for pedestrians on the southern side.
Interspersed throughout the expanses of lawns and trees are sculptures carved from old tree trunks. The sculptures represent various stages of Australian forces at War. The trees , apparently had become deceased and instead of totally removing them the Township commissioned local artist John Brady to make the sculptures. It has become an "Avenue of Honour"

The other side of the Esplanade is mainly commercial with a good selection of shops, hotels, accommodation and clubs .

Accommodation in and around Lakes Entrance

There is just about any type of accommodation that you could image here is a list I'm sure I have not covered everything:-

  • Hotels
  • Motels
  • Caravan Parks and Camping
  • Apartments
  • Cabins and Villas
  • Bed and Breakfasts

On our travels we tend to look for accommodation that has comfort at a reasonable price. Lakes Entrance has these in abundance, especially in off peak times.  Like most resort areas prices can be hight during the peak times such as School Holidays and Long Weekends like Easter.

The Buchan Caves :- Limestone formations
The Buchan Caves :- Limestone formations

Buchan Caves

About three quarters of an hours drive (60 km) from the Lakes is a pretty little town called Buchan. Buchan is mainly is noted for its beautiful caves.

Near the township of Buchan, lies a honeycomb of caves full of spectacular limestone formations. Buchan Caves were formed by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock. The formations are created by rain water seeping through cracks and dissolving some of the limestone. As each droplet comes through the roof it deposits calcite which crystallises in a small ring. In time, stalactites are formed on the roof of the cave, and stalagmites build up from droplets which fall to the floor.

These ancient caves have spectacular limestone formations created by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock that was formed almost 400 million years ago. Professionally guided tours of Royal Cave and Fairy Cave are conducted every day of the year except for Christmas. Both caves are lit and have walkways. Royal Cave features calcite-rimmed pools and in Fairy Cave you will see elaborate stalactites and stalagmites. Tours to 'wild' unlit caves can also be arranged for small groups. The caves are a constant 17 degrees Celcius making the tour a comfortable temperature all year round.

Located in the Reserve, there is a swimming pool, picnic ground, playground, toilets, kiosk and an information centre. Wildlife is plentyful in the reserve. Bellbirds, lyrebirds, and kangaroos are all commonly seen. Entry to the Reserve is free.
As well as a well serviced campground, Buchan Caves has two fully self-contained cabins available that can accommodate up to five people.

I have to agree with you there, Lakes Entrance is a magnificent spot. I've only been there twice but absolutely loved it.

It's a gem on the Victorian coast and the motel I stayed in, unfortunately can't remember the name but it was incredible. So 'art deco' in the room and the restaurant was wonderful.

The Buchan caves were something I'd not seen until my last visit and it's definitely worth going to.

I'm hoping to return in a few months and will try to find the motel I stayed at on my previous visit because the service, the cleanliness and the food were just out of this world.

Hi Shelta, it is such a nice place my wife and I will be going down there again in the next few weeks.

When you go back can you let me know if you find the nice motel you stayed in. By nature of their industry the Fish food is beautiful. Especially the Prawns when they are in season.

Hi ag

This sounds like a great place to visit Ag. Your photos give a hint of how beautiful it is, and I will definitely put it on my list of places to visit when I eventually get to Australia!

G'day Amanda. It's a pity I can't put all of the photo's up here that I have of Lakes Entrance , I really had to fight with myself to make the selections. lol

I do not think you will be disappointed when you finally make it over here. I do not think there is anywhere in the world with a more beautiful coastline than Victoria.

Very pristine and rugged.

Gidday sport. I took my mother for a tour of the east coast from Melbourne to Brisbane back in the sixties, (her only time out of NZ) That area was truly beautiful. (I've just had a look, still have slides of some of that trip!)

BTW, I know a silver fox in Godzone too, - he's a pom!!

ag, your photos are gorgeous! You did good picking them! Like Amanda, Lakes Entrance goes on my list of places to visit if I ever make it to Australia.

They've started turning tree trunks into sculptures where I live too. A wonderful alternative to taking the entire tree down!

agvulpes profile image

G'day mate, I do vaguely remember the "sixties" . I have a lot of slides myself and slowly converting them to digital. (thank god for the digital revolution)

You did not say if your Mother was impressed with Australia, I have found that a lot of Kiwis are slightly underwhelmed with Australia. It seems too big?

Godzone ? don't know the term will you elaborate?

and please sir I am not a silver fox, way beneath me. I have raised to the level of the noble Agvulpes. We are a special bread of fox.

Surely the "The Old Firm" would be aware of this?

G'day JamaGenee, nice to see you again, and thanks for the compliment. It was actually hard to pick the images. I wanted to give viewers the real ambiance of the Lakes area. I hope that the message is coming through, and your not disappointed when you do visit!

The tree trunk sculptures were a great idea as it gave the town a nice way to honour our War Heroes.

Thanks again JamaGenee. ;-[)

It was my mother who took the photos ag and kept them catalogued in boxes until her death. She also corresponded with the elderly friends of mine that she stayed with for my graduation for the rest of her life. She like I thought Aussie a grand country.

Godzone? - God's Own Country, as yours is The Promised Land. Goes back over a hundred years I believe.

ToF , sorry I lost the plot there for a minute. I thought it might have been a game. lmfao. Too much on the old plate today.

Now I understand. It is sad to hear your mum is no longer with you, it is not nice to loose your mum. Mine passed away in 1969 and I still think about her a fair bit.

Cheers mate!

We all must go eventually ag. Although my mother died a few years short of the family average (For the women) she still made 85. Independent until a stroke hospitalised her, the forerunner of cancer.

More to the point how are things with you and yours? I hope you came through comparatively unscathed.

Hi ToF, So far things are OK, the fire danger is no where near over yet .

According to all the forecast from the Weather Bureau we are heading for a bad week next week. We have been told to stay alert. There are still 4 fires burning uncontrolled and 16 contained but still burning.

Cheers mate!

Very nice hub and wonderful photos. I must now add victoria also to my "must see" list. I already have ayers rock, sydney opera house, great barrier reef in my list of places to see in Australia. I don't know when we will travel but one day I hope to do so. It is wonderful place with wonderful people like you, jewel, eric g, earnest and so many other Australian folks that I have begun admiring over the past few months. Thumbs up for a great hub.

countrywomen thank you for your very considerate comment and I hope we live up to admiration , I must say I have great respect for you, especially your ability to communicate with people.

Victoria has many more things to offer you than I have shown.

We have beautifully rugged coast lines steeped in stories of Ship wrecks and daring rescues. I am still waiting patiently to see some photos.;-)

Thank you for sharing these wonderful photos and descriptions of that beautiful area in Australia. We have not made it there yet for a vacation, but I intend to forward this hub to friends of ours who have been there. Everyone that has ever visited Australia comes back and reports loving their experiences. Someday we hope to see it in person.

Peggy. thanks very much for your kind comment. The photos do not do justice to the beautiful coastline we have here in Victoria.

I do not think any visitors go home disappointed with what they have seen.

Well well well! I too love that place. I was there in my childhood, the most memorable of holidays. We went to Buchan Caves which to a child was wonderous, they left an imprint. After 3 years of full on spiritual practices I escaped back there, this is four decades later of course. I travelled over Mt Hotham through Omeo - now that is gorgeous. I spent a week on my own but walked the beaches and explored as much as I could. And revisited the caves. I even went to the mouth of the Snowy River which is in the area. I made a point of dangling my feet in the water as a mark of exploration and conquer! The Gippsland area recharged me, and I'll probably go again one day.

G'day Chris, my photos don't do it full justice, the atmosphere is almost indescribable when you walk along the surf beach with the roar of the ocean, cool breeze in your face. And you cannot see another living soul as far as the sand stretches.

I must tell you that is only one of many spots on the Victorian coastline.

I should do some more hubs on Victoria.

G'day Jewels, it is not surprising when you travel over the Gippsland area you can feel the spirituallity of the place. Especially the off the beat tracks like the Snowy river, The Buchan Caves and there is a place called Nungerner and another called Den of Nargun near Bairnsdale. The whole area is steeped in Aboriginal lore.

It is a fantastic area to go for the old recharge of live.

Jewels thanks for sharing some of your great memories.

G'day aj unfortunately the prawns are seasonal from the end of summer to mid autumn . So if it is a prawn your looking for you will have to time your visits, or you will get the raw prawn.

Shmbo and I did the tree change thing too, but now we would like to get down by the sea where the air is clear , the nights are balmy and all is well with the world.

If only?

thanks for dropping by . Cheers mate.
