Bi Polar Disorder Treatment with Lamictal
66Bi polar disorder is a very serious psychiatric disorder that is difficult to treat. Bi polar people must endure extreme mood swings from periods of manic and hyperenergetic and then dropping to bouts of depression, eventually pushing them towards suicidal and homicidal tendencies if not properly treated. Current bi polar medication is very expensive, costing up to $15 for a daily dosage. This is because 3 types of bi polar medicine must be prescribed to control the two extremely difference symptoms that can arise, and they are commonly referred as anti-anxiety, anti-depressant and mood stabilizing drugs. Since these bipolar medications can only control the bi polar conditions and not completely cure, they are long term medication that must be taken regularly for the rest of the bi polar peoples' lives. Of these medications, Lamictal was found to significantly stabilize mood swings and reduce the reoccurrence of bi polar disorders.
Lamictal (also known as Lamotrigene) is a well known bipolar anticonvulsant and approval by the US FDA for treating people with bi polar disorder since 2003. Clinical studies shown that Lamictal provides stronger manic antidepressant properties compared to both carbamazepine and valproate, which is used for consideration when prescribing Lamictal for bipolar treatment. Lamictal is used on bipolar/manic depression people when the usual combination of lithium, valproate and carbamazepine are not sufficient to provide stabilizing effects on their bipolar mood swings.
Major depression patients can also be prescribed Lamictal as it has been found to be useful for borderline personality disorders (BPD) and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) according to recent research publications. Initial observations showed that Lamictal is actually more effective on patients with severe bipolar symptoms or schizoaffective disorders while being non responsive on unipolar disorder patients.
However, there are still many ongoing clinical investigations to examine the effects of Lamictal on other types of bipolar, mental and emotional disorders. For example, Lamictal is frequently tested on people with depressed or manic depression disorders after the preferred medications for these bipolar conditions proved non responsive. Lamictal is also in the midst of being testing for use on treating panic attacks in bipolar patients. However results are mostly negative and panic attack conditions do not improve even after weeks on taking Lamictal. Anyway, on the topic of bipolar treatments, there is growing evidence supporting the effectiveness of Lamictal as a long term preventive, prophylactic medication.
