Architectural shingles are also known as laminated or three-dimensional shingles. These are premium asphalt-based roofing shingles. The first commercially successful asphalt shingle was produced in 1953. Since then, manufacturers of asphalt shingles have worked on to create roofing shingles that could be used as a substitute for wood, tile, and slate roofing in terms of texture and visual looks and appearance.

Three-dimensional laminated shingles

An asphalt shingle is basically flat, asphalt-saturated cellulose or fiberglass mat coated with mineral granules. It has been a kind of challenge for manufacturers of roofing materials to make asphalt shingles look natural, textured, and three-dimensional.

Three-dimensional, laminated shingles were first introduced in the 1970s. They were built up from two or more layers of material sandwiched together. The surface granules were colored to imitate shadow patterns.

There has been significant improvement in manufacturing of three-dimensional laminated shingles recent years. Refinements of the three-dimensional shingle have resulted in a new generation of high-quality asphalt roofing products with distinctive and dramatic visual look and appearances. With these improvements and advancements, we have new generation of shingles called - architectural shingles.

The top overlay of these architectural shingles is often notched, cut in a saw-tooth pattern, and offset for new definition and interest. They have extra thickness which makes these shingles weigh more than conventional asphalt-based shingles. Weights may run up to about 430 pounds per square feet. These shingles also have longer warranties which may run over 20 to 25 years.
