Lapis Lazuli - The Gemstone of Saturn

Lapis lazuli is an opaque, vibrant blue gemstone belonging to the semiprecious gemstone category. The name of this stone is derived from the Latin word ‘lapis’ which means ‘stone’ and the Arabic word 'azula' which means blue. This is one of the first gemstones worn as jewelry and has a history which can be traced back to several thousands of years back. Lapis Lazuli stones have been used by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians and Romans. This stone was also used by Pharaohs in Egypt for making sculptures, jewelry and carvings. Lapis Lazuli is associated with the Planets Saturn and Venus as well as the Zodiac Signs of Sagittarius, Capricorn and Libra. It is the birthstone of September. Lapis lazuli is also the Wedding Anniversary Gemstone for the 7th and 9th year of marriage.

This Gemstone was used in earlier days to manufacture radiant blue watercolors, tempera or oil-paints and is seen in several historical paintings. Cleopatra is said to have used powder lapis lazuli as eye shadow. This gem is also referred to as ‘Lazurite’. This gem is said to be a gem of love, friendship and truth as it encourages harmony in relationships and help its wearer express openly. Lapis Lazuli is used for Healing purposes. It has been useful in overcoming health conditions like depression, thyroid, insomnia and problems associated with the eyes, throat and ears. It is also used as treating chronic diseases, allergies, blood pressure and skin diseases. Lapis lazuli is also said to eliminate negative emotions. This is a high intensity gem which can open many of the chakra centers. Lapis Lazuli is used while meditating for better effects. The stone is said to increase psychic abilities and promotes spirituality. This gem is also believed to promote creativity and awareness and is a wonderful stone to be worn for people requiring communication like educators and politicians. This gem also was used as a Charm to protect the wearer from all evil. Women suffering from pain during menstruation should wear this stone.

Lapis Lazuli can easily be scratched or chipped. Water can also dissolve the stone's protective coatings. Hence it is advisable not to use it as a regular wear stone. This stone should be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. This stone should always be protected from acidic substances and too much sunlight. Lapis Lazuli deposits are found in several places including Italy, Mongolia, Canada, Myanmar, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Middle East, Europe, Chile, the Soviet Union and the United States.

Lapis Lazuli is one of the most beautiful gems to me. Thank you for such an informative hub about it. I never knew the connection it had to astrology. I'm going to go look through my bag of gems to see if I have this one, because it sounds like one that I need pronto. :)

Yes, it is a beautiful gem. Just make sure that you don't wear it throughout the Day and if you want to use it for healing purpose, only an expert should do the cleansing process. Thanks for your Comment.

Anamika,

I just ordered a lapis luzuli gemstone. If I can't wear during the day, where should I keep it to block the negative energy. Also, in regard to the cleaning process, can you give a tip, how to do the cleansing by ourselves. thanks for your helpful comments and articles

Thanks for the response. You can carry the stone along with you in a pouch or even keep it somewhere near if you are not wearing it. You can clean the jewelry with a soft brush and mild soap.
