When you want to upgrade the memory of your laptop, you need to know what to look for. Desktop systems typically have three or four slots for upgrading memory. Laptops only come with two slots, so you need to make sure you make the best choices to maximize your laptop's memory.

•    Music or gaming in your plans? Go with at least 512 MB of memory or more.

If the amount you calculate for your needs is close to one of these categories, say you calculate you need 370 MB of memory for example, opt for the next higher amount for best results. In our example case, you would probably be happier with 512 MB of memory rather than just 384 MB.

Some laptops are limited as to how much memory they can handle. Make sure you know the limitations of your laptop before you make your purchase. Your owner's manual or a visit to the manufacturer's website can probably help you find out how much memory your laptop can handle.
