If you find that your laptop computer has developed either hardware or software problems, you are going to have to decide which laptop repairs may be needed. Although some people are particularly good at diagnosing computer problems, most people need to take their laptops to a computer store or technician for laptop repair. Before handing your laptop computer over to somebody who is going to fix it, whether it be a store technician or just a "computer whiz" friend of yours, there are several things you should do first in order to protect your privacy as well as the safety of your files and data.

Some people prefer to use a file encryption tool to safeguard their data files before they let anybody perform laptop repairs. These types of programs are designed so that files are not accessible unless a person knows the correct password. Most versions of Windows have encryption settings available, or you might feel more secure by using a third party application or utility to encrypt your files. You do need to keep in mind that it is essential to remember the password that you will use when un-encrypting the files, because you will not be able to open the files without it.

Instead of going to the bother of using a file encryption tool, another security strategy simply involves backing up the files onto an external drive, CD or DVD, and then using a delete utility to completely remove the files from the hard drive of your laptop. Then, after the laptop repairs are complete and your computer is returned to you, the files can be put back onto your computer.

Before taking your computer in for laptop repairs, you will also want to protect your privacy and security by clearing out your operating system and browser temporary files. You will also want to make sure that you are not keeping any sensitive information on your laptop, such as credit or debit card number, pin numbers, or passwords.

Because of the fact that laptop screens are delicate and easily damaged, laptop screen repair issues can be quite common. If you have a laptop computer with a damaged screen, chances are the laptop screen is going to need replaced. You can have your laptop screen situation assessed at a computer repair shop, and then decide if you feel it is worth getting the screen replaced, or if you might just be better off getting a new laptop instead.

Sometimes common laptop repairs are particularly associated with a specific brand of laptop. For instance, a common Toshiba laptop repair issue involves overheating, and the problems and symptoms that can result because it overheats. If you are trying to do some initial research to find out what might be wrong with it before taking it to the shop for repair, you will find that searching online can really help. If you do a search for your specific problem, in addition to the make and model of your computer, you will often find a number of people that are having the same problem. This can be helpful information to give to the technician when you take your laptop in for repair, as a place to start looking for the problem.

Another example of a brand and model-specific computer repair issue is the power-jack problem that seems to afflict many HP Pavilion-series laptops. If you have this particular HP laptop repair issue, you might notice that your computer shuts down for no reason, or it might refuse to start or recharge the battery. If your problem is specific to a particular make or model of computer, you might want to start by contacting the manufacturer, especially if your research shows that this is a problem that is common among this particular type of computer.

If your laptop is still fairly new and under warranty, you will want to check to see if your particular problem might be covered by your warranty before paying for laptop computer repair. Depending on the type of computer and the place of purchase, you might be required to return the laptop to the manufacturer by mail, or you might be instructed to take it to a specific repair facility.
