Largest Prarie Dog In the World

I remember traveling across Kansas in an old dodge dart, heading for Colorado. Nothin to see in those days but wheat, corn, the occasional oil well. Time would pass slowly on a hot summer day. Why one would get excited to see a hawk flying just to break the monotony of it all. We all played road games to pass the time. By the time you get past Hays, you are tired of the games. Couple hours later, the signs would appear. Largest Prairie Dog in The World. 50 miles. Signs would be red with white writing, much like the Burma Shave slogan signs of days gone past.
Burma Shave
Burma Shave was a shaving cream. Back before the big billboards that cross America now, Burma shave would place 4 to 6 signs in a row, with slogans on them. The last one would always say Burma Shave.
They would have all sorts of humor or tips on them. Some examples.
Shaving Brushes
You’ll soon see’em
On a shelf
In some museum
Burma Shave.
And
He tried
To cross
As fast train neared
Death didn't draft him
He volunteered
Burma-Shave
and
Doesn't
Kiss you
Like she useter?
Perhaps she's seen
A smoother rooster!!
Burma-Shave
We knew we were getting close when we saw this sign.
The signs would count down the miles, and tell of the wonders within. "5 legged cow" Two Headed Rattle Snake" They would get your curiosity up. You could see Prairie Dog Town on your left as you were heading west. They had a huge sign and a statue of a prairie dog. We couldn't wait. Route 66 had nothing on this. We were all tired of sitting in the car and had to have a restroom break to boot.
We got off the exit and crossed over the highway. We stretched our legs and went inside. They had a gift shop. There were all kinds of signs and taxidermied animals. They even had real authentic stuffed Jackalopes! I had to get a couple of postcards with the Jackalopes to show my friends back in St. Louis I wasn't pullin their legs.
We paid the nominal entrance fee and headed out side. They had all kinds of critters in cages. Coyotes and rabbits. They had a steer with 5 legs, though it almost looked as though the appendage was sewn on and was just kind of hanging there. It was a little sad, but he seemed to take good care of the critters. Their areas were clean.
Now it was summer and the hot prairie winds were blowing, we were tired and had to make Colorado Springs by dinner time so that we could eat at The Depot. We were standing by the little prairie dog town, all nice and fenced off. We asked the fellow (I think he was the owner) now where do you keep the Big one? You know, the one on the signs? He just kind of chuckled and pointed to the big statue "why he's right there!". Now back in the days when this happened, you could see him from the highway. I see that now he has put up a big fence.
We paid our money, took the tour. If you are ever going down Hwy 70 through western Kansas, it would be well worth your time to stop and visit Prairie Dog Town.

He Said She Said, I love it! I'm currently in (rural) Saskatchewan, Canada and there's nothing but wheat, canola, and the weirdest roadside attractions you've ever seen. I think I'm the only person in the world that loves gophers! I know the farmers hate them but they're just sooo cute. You've inspired me to write a hub about weird Canadian roadside attractions. I'll be sure to link my hub to yours. Good luck on the challenge. This is a fantastic start.
Anamika Thank you, hope you enjoyed it. We shure did.
futonfraggle I would love to read about your "weird" roadside attractions. We also have a large ball of twine, which I may do myself. Thanks and come visit again.
Welcome to Hubpages. Yes, B.T. Evilpants is our resident jackalope.
I miss the Burma Shave signs! A few are still around, on backroads. But they broke the monotony when I was a kid on the way to visit relatives in western Kansas. My dad rarely drove more than 45, *maybe* 50 if he was in a hurry, so my brother and I had a *lot* of time to read signs, play License Plate Bingo...and count the blades of grass. ;D
Oh, I hope you do a hub on the ball of twine! From the signs, you think it's several stories high! (I've seen it - twice.) The replicas of the Statue of Liberty are pretty neat. If memory serves, two are in the Cawker-Smith Center area, just "there" in the middle of a field on the side of the road!
Hank & Naddy, I think you will get a kick out of this:

I'd like to read about that big ole ball of twine! I love roadside attractions.
Excellent hub! I'll be watching you to see what more you have.
This is Americana! Weird Al Yankovic did a song about the worlds biggest ball of string, but I've never seen that, either!
HSSS - hey :) Enjoyed this. The signs were great - and original.
Well done and welcome to hubpages!
JamaGenee, B.T. Evilpants, now that's a fun name.
Hanks got all kinds of stories and sights he gets excited about. I'm pretty sure he's mulling over writing about the ball of twine. (He's napping now, so I thought I'd just check over the comments -- he'll have more to say I'm sure.) As for the mph, hank never lets me drive the highway because I have a lead foot. Now don't get mad, Hank, but you're foot is heavier than mine and you know it.
futonfraggle, thans for that link. Went right over and it sounds very exciting. We're going to have to plan a trip.
Thank you Jerilee. You've got a talent for stories and we've been enjoying them.
Tom, we heard that one. I'll have to tell Hank to include that in his twine hub.
frogdropping, glad to see you. I hope everyone reading this has taken a look at your dragon hubs. What a hoot. Got Hank and I laughing silly.
JamaGenee and Tom, I will have to unravel that one.
Futonfraggle,
I enjoyed your page on Canada so much. I will have to sneak another look tomorrow.
We go past there every summer! Stopped in once when I was young. (felt jipped on the statue part, but loved the whole thing. If I remember correctly, I bought a bag of shiny rocks. :D
Oh yes, the statue. You could see it clear from the highway. Hehe.
Thanks,
Hank
What a great hub! I only remember those types of signs from episodes of HeeHaw! Never got to see the real ones. Thanks for sharing!
HeeHaw! Now that does bring back good laughs and memories. Thanks for that KCC. ~Hank and Naddy
JamaGenee says that there are still a few around. I would love to know where.
Hank
Hilarious - have not seen Burma Shave signs since I was a kid -- and in a museum. Thanks!
Oh you're welcome. They sure were popular.
Very fun hub you 2. I remember those signs as a youngster, couldn't read then haha, my sister would read them aloud to us as she was 9 years my senior. I will need mopre time to read the other hubs, but promise I will. I must go now and play with my penguin.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I was just reminiscing about the times I played with my gopher.
Hank
