LASIK stands for Laser Assisted Situ Keratomileusis. It is a form of laser eye surgery that is used to correct some of the problems related to eyes. There were previously practiced methods like photorefractive keratectomy commonly known as PRK but LASIK surgeries can enable a patient to recover quickly and the operating time and relative pain is also less. But one reason that why PRK is still practiced is that there are a number of occasions where PRK is considered better than LASIK but overall, LASIK is a better choice for the majority of the patient.

LASIK surgery can also be an alternative to contact lenses or eye glasses as it can also solves the eye defect due to which optical wearable is needed. The technique uses a mechanical blade to cut a small flap through the cornea and a laser that fired a beam of a few nanoseconds and used a small energy of about 10 micro joules. This laser beam altered the shape of the cornea as needed and the flap was later closed after completion of the surgical procedure.

There are some post surgery effects that are minor and can be recovered without much pain in few weeks. One of the side effects is the bursting of the blood vessels inside the eye due to which the white area of the eyes appears red. But this is not painful and recovers in weeks. LASIK surgery can be performed to anyone but it is recommended to perform it after the patient is 18 years or more in age.
