What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal
It is not uncommon for potential laser hair removal recipients to feel a little uneasy about the whole process and how it will affect their skin. The laser beam, however, is a very harmless and dependable instrument. In addition, it is relatively pain-free. These and any other concerns that a patient may experience should be thoroughly discussed with the doctor prior to undergoing any treatment. He or she will ease any fears and help the client to understand what will happen before, during and after the removal process.
One of the first things that will happen during the initial appointment is the trimming of the hair on the area being treated. A nurse or assistant will do this and it is recommended that the patient refrain from shaving the skin in the days preceding treatment. Any hairs that have been plucked, waxed or tweezed in the weeks prior will make the procedure ineffective so this beauty regimen is discouraged in anticipation of the removal appointment.
Because the skin is such a delicate organ, it is important that a cooling gel be applied prior to the laser meeting the skin. This practice is common and will work to protect the skin from any damaging effects while it deadens the hairs.

Another safety measure is the use of protective goggles. Both the
doctor performing the procedure and the patient will don these
appliances to protect the eyes from any damaging rays. Once protected,
the dermatologist will place a handheld apparatus close to the skin and
aim the laser past the surface. Each beat of the laser disables a
particular section of hairs. Although there may be a brief stinging
feeling during treatment, there won't be any extreme or even moderate
pain. Areas like the upper lip, because they are small, can be
completed in under 15 minutes while large areas like the legs, could
take up to 2 hours for removal.
There is a chance that the
treated area may look a little swollen or red following treatment.
Although this irritation should improve within a few days the doctor
can assist with the healing process by administering soothing gels or
ointments. Icing the area after the procedure could also help. Patients
usually find that the hairs targeted during the process begin shedding
over the first few weeks after removal. A light exfoliation can speed
this along.
The best results will be achieved if patients schedule return visits for treatment 4 to 6 weeks apart. Successful laser hair removal
takes into consideration the cyclical growth patterns of the human hair
and, as not every follicle will be in a growth phase at the same time,
a series of treatments is required. As the removal sessions progress,
more and more hairs will be visible as the doctor works toward
completely smooth skin. After a number of clinic visits patients should
experience long-lasting results and may find that there is no need for
follow-up treatment. Because, however, lasers will work to disable the
hair instead of completely killing the follicle, future procedures may
be necessary.
