What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are actually small scars that form under the top layer of skin in the dermis. Scarring occurs when the underlying tissue grows so rapidly that the skin can't keep up with it. This causes small gaps to form in the dermis that are then filled in with scar tissue. The scars often start out as dark or purple lines and over time may become silvery in color. In addition to being a different color the texture of stretch marks is also different from the rest of the surrounding skin with the marked area being rippled and less elastic.
