Laser Hair Restoration
71Laser hair restoration is one of the best ways to restore hair growth. Many people are affected daily by hair loss. Men and women alike suffer from the embarrassing balding patterns. A healthy head of hair is the crown and glory promoting self confidence and pride.
The basic cause is that circulation to the area of the head where hair is grown begins to decrease as we age. This stops the growth of hair. Other causes are hereditary and some health related. Iron deficiency is the top most health related reason that hair stops growing or begins to fall out. Whatever the reason, people just don't want their hair to stop growing. Recent studies show that men who were bald were asked if they had a choice would they have hair and 78% said yes.
History of Laser Hair Restorations
The history of the laser hair restoration techniques goes back as far as 1964 researchers began testing cold laser lights on shaved mice to see if they would regrow hair faster than those that did not receive the laser treatment. Andrew Mester at the University of Budapest, proved that when the mice under the laser grew hair at a much more accelerated rate.
Types of Laser Hair Restoration
There are at least 3 different types of laser hair restoration. Be sure to chose a doctor who can perform all three treatments. He will more than likely be able to recommend the proper procedure depending on your type of hair loss.
The first is the laser Luce LDS 100 which is capable of stimulating about 70% of hair follicles at their resting stage. The patient is required to sit under a dome that looks similar to a hair dryer at the beauty salon. The low energy laser lights flash along the inside of the interior and increases blood flow to the hair region. The light energy is absorbed into the deeper tissues of the skin which is what has to occur to increase the blood supply. Since we are not mice and can not have this with us at all times, tis therapy will have to be administered several times to achieve the best results.
Next is Low Level laser therapy or LLLT. This similar therapy induces a lower level of light that does not break the skin surface. Instead your doctor will search for the proper wavelength of light energy to enhance cell growth that will increase blood flow to the scalp. It is most commonly used after hair transplant surgery to help heal the scalp. It is also used on burn patients as well as a healing and restoring solution.
Finally, the Home Laser Hair Therapy Device or Laser Comb, can be used daily and is far less expensive than going in for treatments. When brushed through the hair it administers phototherapy to the scalp. Though the treatment can be used alone, it is recommended to use with the combination of one of the other two therapies to get the maximum results.
Laser Hair Restoration Costs
The costs of these types of treatment can start at around $2000 and as much as $10,000 for full treatment. Be prepared to have to go through this at least three times as suggested by some specialists. You will need to keep the blood supply open once it is restored, so there may be follow up treatments. Often your specialist will have you use Rogaine or Propecia in combination to get the highest results of laser therapy. Both products work to increase stimulation of the scalp.
Pros and Cons of Laser Hair Restoration
The pros of laser hair restoration are thicker, healthier hair follicles, it restores youth and vitality to your appearance. The cons are price and it can not make hair grow where there are no hair follicles. In that case you will also need to receive a hair transplant.
Some doctors believe that laser hair restoration works best in patients with only thinning hair. The follicles are not yet incapacitated or dead, so they will react to the treatment. It is also a better therapy for hair in the mid vertex and crown areas. The frontal portion of the scalp is more likely to have a better hair quality rather than an overall hair restoration.
Choosing Your Specialist
When choosing your hair laser specialist, be sure to ask questions. Some doctors will offer free laser treatments with other procedures. So initial consultations are important. Don't just go for the first hair specialist that offers you a miracle cure. There is no such thing. A true specialist will offer you several options, not just one choice.
