I was accompanying a survey team whose main responsibility was to suggest an appropriate place for developing a modern shopping complex near an expressway. Our team on a tour to western Uttar Pradesh, the so called granary of India. There is a district called "Buland shahar". It is known as the wheat belt. Buland means "great" and shahar is the urdu word for a "city". A river called "Gang nahar" passes through agricultural fields of Buland shahar district. Our team had to stay in the city in the night and next day we've to travel along the canal embarkments and select a site near the Expressway. Our stay was very comfortable in the night and we reached the site in the morning. While carrying out benchmark survey, we've to interview the residents of nearby villages and ask them several questions. Suddenly an idea came to my mind and I asked the villagers to figure out a legend from the area who devoted his life for the well being of the people in the area. The villagers told us that the land you are standing on belonged to the person we're interested to know. On inquiring we came to know that land adjoined to river was the agricultural farm of late Babu ji Vikram Singh and now being managed by their descendants. Further inquiries suggested that "Babu Ji" was the title crowned by the people of the area to the late Jat leader who was the son of landlord late Chaudhary Nahar Singh. Eldest of three sons, and highly educated person of the fifties, was regarded highly by the people habitating Khurja, Jewar, Aligarh, Khair, Jattari and other adjoining blocks.
The name of the village where Babu ji Vikram Singh was born is Nekpur. This village is located 16 km away from Khrja Junction and about 12 km from Jewar. The nearest town is Jahangirpur. Although villagers belong to different castes but village is dominated by Jats. Babu ji Vikram Singh was well known for his knowledge of laws and rules used to govern land related matters and different penal codes used to maintain law and orders. He was offered a very high position by Brishers to serve as an Govt. Officer but it was against his taste and he politely refused the offer. He prefered to live as a farmer and help people with his knowledge, money and relations with people in political and government circle. His Haveli (Pucca house) is believed to be crowded day and night by the needy poor people of the area. It is understood that he never denied help to poor and illiterate people who came to seek his help in terms of money, advise or his help in court or land related disputes. There were no schools in the nearby locations to impart education to children residing in rural areas. It was due to effort of late Babu ji Vikram Singh that a middle school was established in the Jahangirpur town. He was made president of the management committee of this school and he worked for its development. The school later was upgraded to plus two levels and several students of this school are presently holding very high positions in public and private sector.
He was always ready to help people at the time of crisis and never hesitated to help anyone irrespective of caste and religion. Although born in a great family, he never differentiated between poor and rich. He is remembered for his views on casteism and religion. he helped people of all spheres without hesitation. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Schedule castes and any needy person never returned empty handed from his house. It was famous about him that he never allowed anyone to pay fares or any other bills who came to him for some sort of help and took him to cities, courts, politicians and government officials for help. He helped people with his own money and that was the reason that people respected and loved him.
We asked people to narrate some interesting incidences related to late Babu Ji Vikram Singh. They told us two incidences. Let me tell you before these incidences that he lived in a joint family. However, this family also disintegrated. Remarkable thing about his attitude: He gave his Haveli to the younger brother and came out of this Haveli with the youngest brother. He constructed another house and resided in this house with youngest brother for few years. Later on youngest brother also insisted to stay separate. Babu ji agreed to his demand and gave the ownership of the house to youngest brother. It is said that he made a small house for his own family in the later part of his life.
He was against all bad practices and customs prevalent in the society. He never favored a person who has committed wrong. Once, there has been an incidence of theft in her younger brother's home. Incidently, two policemen were staying in the same house on the night of the theft. Policemen were afriad if the incidence is reported they would have to face problems. They requested Babu ji not to report matter. Babu ji did not report the incidence to police. However, he took an oath that he won't enter his house until and unless he succeeds in getting back all the items stolen by the thieves. He kept his promise and entered his house only after each and every items was returned back by thieves to his brother.
Another incidencerelated to a false case in which opponents tried to implicate him. It is understood that he took an oath that he'll kill himself if he is compelled to stay in the prison for a moment. Fortunately, moment did noit come and he was relieved of all the charges as witnesses in the case narrated the truth in front of the judge and honorable judge cancelled the arrest warrant against him and discharged him free of all all charges. Now-a-days, politician feel proud if they are arrested and sent to prison.

Babu Ji born in a very influential family in village Nekpur on January 13, 1917. Village Nekpur is located near Jahangirpur (3 km), a small town, situated on Khurja-Jewar road. Village comes under Khurja block. His father, Late Nahar Singh, was a landlord and has about 600 bighas of land. He was eldest of six brothers and was the most educated among them. Always dressed in white "dhoti and kurta", he apperaed a very sofisticated and educated person among the masses. His assessibility to poor people made him very popular; his always ready to help attitude made him leader of masses. After the death of his father, he allowed all his brothers to stay in the parental houses and made a separate and ordinary house for himself and family on a vaccant land. Though born in a rich family, he himself became an average farmer after spending all his earnings to the cause of poor people.
He had long-sightedness and worked to make good education available to the children of villagers of the area. Since Jahangirpur was the center place among the cluster of villages, he approached the authorities to open a school in Jahangirpur. He sought the help of people of all castes and religions for this noble cause. His efforts succeeded and a private college upto plus two level came into existence. He was made "President" of the college management committee and worked day and night to make good education available to children of rural area.

There are people in India who are above earthly pleasure and behave like monks & Saints – they were the proud of India.
There is a need to make people aware of such great people. Thanks Roychoudhury.
