History Of The Lava Light
Admit it ant one time or another you owned and loved one of those clear, vase like, ooze filled lamps. They were coo, they were fun, they were hypnotic.
At least that's how Chicago bussinessman Adolf Wertheimer felt when he first viewed a astrolight at a furniture convention in Germany. Created by Englishman Craven Walker, it was a cylinder, tapered at the end and filled with water and a glob of colored sticky wax. Warmed by a coil in the base, the wax swelled, twisted and rose and fell through the water. When it reached the top away from the heat the wax would cool and fall only to heat up and rise again.
Though there was a light bulb in the base of the lamp, the Astrolight was intended to provide a colorful, psychedelic light show, not room lighting illumination. Wertheimer knew the lamp would appeal to young American's and he imported them under the name lava lamps. He sold 2 million of them by 1970, though sales tapered off when the hippies of the 1960's became the bussinessmen and women of the 1970's. Also consumers were bummed out by the fact that the wax tended to come apart and bead after a few years use not putting on the show they once did.
Nostalgia and a 20th anniverary marketing campaign caused a Lava Lamp comeback in 1985 and today various versions of them are still sold.

Cool Mountain Dew trick!
Did you ever hear about that moron that put his lava lamp on the stove-top because his light-bulb burnt out? The lamp exploded due to the high pressure from too much heat and a shard of glass went into his chest and killed him.
By the way...I have had a lava lamp since childhood and still have one.
