In summer, lawn maintenance should be performed daily, and these include mowing and watering. During the months approaching the cold season, additional preventive steps should also be taken. On the other hand, dethatching, aeration, and the administration of proper nutrition are important elements of annual lawn maintenance.

How does one make sure that a lawn gets proper nutrition? Annual lawn maintenance involves the use of a slow-release fertilizer which encourages a robust and uniform growth month after month. Lawn maintenance during the summer months would take around 4-5 equally spaced feedings, which should come up to about once each month.

It is very important to allow the circulation of oxygen in the soil to enrich the soil's overall quality. This process in lawn maintenance is called soil aeration and should be done at least every other year to give the grass the air it needs for healthy growth.

Inevitably, thatching occurs and becomes a concern in lawn maintenance. This happens when large amounts of dead grass build up between the soil and the new grass growth. As such, the grass cannot easily get its nutrients due to the buildup and a process called dethatching becomes necessary.

Dethatching requires aeration to give the grass the air it needs to grow. However, the thatch can often be unwieldy so most lawn owners leave this lawn maintenance job to the professionals.

Everyday Lawn Maintenance

A good lawn maintenance plan requires constant regular watering. This keeps the lawn green and prevents the grass from withering in extreme heat. Two to three thorough waterings within a week is adequate as it is believed that plants cannot utilize more than an inch of water per week.

In lawn maintenance, perform a thorough drenching of the lawn instead of a light sprinkling. When grass isn't watered this way, shallow roots, which give rise to browning easily, occurs. Do your watering in the early morning 2-3 times a week.

Another important task in proper lawn maintenance is mowing. In summer, grass grows faster and thus mowing is more often required. Make it a point to mow the lawn at least twice a week during the warm months and once a week in spring. Of course, the frequency of mowing in lawn maintenance still depends on the type of grass you have in your lawn.

Grasses that thrive in warm weather can be cut to lower heights, but this may not be the case for their cold-weather counterparts. The common types of grasses grow best at a height of 2-4 inches, and also look their best at this measurement. A rule of thumb in lawn maintenance is never to trim grass to more than one-third of its height.

It's very fulfilling to have a lwan that looks healthy and welcoming. Lawn maintenance involve not just simple daily waterings, but also annual lawn maintenance practices to facilitate the plants' nutrient uptake.
