The Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act of 1998 has allowed lawyers to offer many services to assist victims of identity theft. More than 9.9 million people have been affected personally by this type of crime. It not only takes their money and property but their feelings of security are affected as well. While a person convicted of identity theft can get up to 25 years in prison, most culprits are never caught. They are able to hide well and live under the radar using the money the have stolen.

The damage a person suffers from identity theft can be reduced if they have a lawyer who is skilled in the area. They can help them take the right steps in order to rebuilt their credit and become financial secure. If possible, the lawyer will assist with filing motions against the person responsible for the theft.

Identity theft is a felony that involves any aspect of taking someone's social security card, driver's license, credit cards, bank account information, or similar issues that result in personal gain. One reason that it is so hard to find those responsible it that it is often conducted online by hacking into personal computer systems.

If you are the victim of identity theft then hiring a lawyer can provide you with the chance to get your reputation cleared and your life back on track. You don't want to lose your job or your home because of what has been taken from you. Make sure you protect yourself by shredding anything with personal information and that you only use online websites that are secure.

Even before getting to a lawyer, one should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission: http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft - Then take that form, along with the 'Law Enforcement Cover Letter' to the police to file an official report.... Gotta line up your ducks ya know.
