Welcome to the New World of endless Career Changes.

Well not that new, at least since the middle of the 1980s has the, especially here in the United States, has the work force been as mobile as it has been. Between mergers, downsizings, dot com booms and busts, and the outsourcing craze American Workers have had to become more flexible in looking for work, and in being willing to change jobs. This has led to a mentality vastly different than that of even one generation ago, who had hope and expectations that they would work 20 to 30 years at a single employer, get a pension, retire and be taken care of, financially, till death.

Not any longer.

In this post Hostile Takeovers, Outsource all you can world, it is more important than ever to have a safety net, to have a second or third plan set up. No longer can we count on a retirement, unless it is the Military or some Government Jobs. The large corporations have cut to the bone in reducing their expenses, at the expense of their employees, so we as individuals need to make our own plans, make our own retirements and ensure our own careers on ourselves.

So now is the time to take control, to take charge of your future and plan out where you want to be in the next year, the next 3 years, the next 10 years, and with that plan, move forward into your own personal Career Future and make your life the way you wish to.

Career Counseling

Career Counseling is the art and science of helping others with advice and support in their search for a career, or in advancing themselves within their chosen career.

It is an important path to consider as jobs are constantly changing and evolving. Entire fields have come and gone in the last 45 years, entire industries have sprung into existence, while work paths that were open to our grandparents have essentially disappeared. It is necessary to examine where you are at, take stock in your situation, and decide on the path to pursue.

This is where Career Counseling can assist. From Life and Work Coaches, to Mentors and Networking, finding someone who has walked that path already can yield immesaureable benefits.

Aiding in making sound choices, avoiding mistakes, even changing your mind and finding new avocations can come from working with Career Counseling.

Education:

One thing that can easily set you apart from the competition is education and training. Look into local initiatives to improve work force education, see what the local colleges can offer even if it is for Certification. Look into Scholarships to take classes. Once the current economic situation settles and the world relaxes, new skills and ideas will serve you well

One thing to consider is the size of the company you are looking at. Back in July of 2008 a report validated the thinking, that small new start ups are a main source of new jobs. Also consider Non-Profits, while the salary and tangible benefits. Look beyond just the paycheck and ways to help the community as well.

Forecasted Trends

Here are some of the trends I perceive and where I think they may end up at here in the next ten years or so. They of course affect what I see as up and coming as well as persistent Career Potentials

  • End of Benefits for employees
  • End of Full Time Permanent employment except in certain industries
  • Return of Industrial capacity to countries
  • Increased Sustainability, Permaculture, Renewable and Recycling to all world facets

Looking at this list I see an even more outsourced, contract employee mentality. I had started a short story a few months back posulating that all companies could be contract employees. With good turnovers between managers, with some overlap, all you really need is some rented office space and one or two visionaries to own the company, the rest can be contract employees.

I quit my job to establish my own business long ago and I've work at home for so many years. I did not get a chance to get layoff but do find my freelance business getting slower than ever. I guess not only American workers need to be felxible but business owners. I started to accept offers that fits customer's budget (which means most likely an under paid project) so I at least kept myself busy most of the time.

By the way, I like the picture of office desk vs. the picture of "home" office desk. My "office desk" and "home office desk" are both like battle fields, the only difference is one big and another one is much smaller. It's good that you can make your home business mobile now; I am getting less client visits me then ever (All the job can be done through phone conferencing and email. Thanks to modern technology!) especially the time when gasoline price ran up crazy not long ago.
