PAY GOOD ATTENTION - If you want to learn Basic English

You may think because it's basic, it'll be easy.

But many people say the beginning is the hardest part.

Now, I don't want to scare you, this wasn't my intention. I just want to point out that simply learning the "alphabet" or the "numbers" won't help you master the basics. No, no, no, there's far more than that.

BEFORE WE BEGIN I want you to answer me this question:

How well do you know English?

  • I'm struggling with English. Actually, I even have problems reading what you write.
  • I can understand (including what you're saying now), but need room for improvement
  • I'm beyond the basic level. I'd consider myself to be in the early-intermediate level

IF You Have Chosen The First Option...

I think I have a solution for you. In case you've chosen the second or the third option, scroll down on this page. However, I still think you'll be interested in reading this.

So, you can barely understand English?

I will give you a few tips and a good resource recommendation.

When you start learning, learn phrases not words. Learning only words without putting the word into a phrase or a sentence is USELESS.

There are numerous research reports to prove this (Dr. James Asher) if you want to investigate further.

Now, for a resource, I recommend Rosetta Stone. Why?

Because they are the best I've seen in implementing this + they use cutting edge learning tools.

So, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend you get this program if you can barely understand what I'm saying!

What should I do if I've chosen the second option?

In that case, the same tip I gave above applies to you, too. There are some methods taught in English courses and schools which are plainly WRONG.

Here's one more tip. Use grammar as a reference, not as one of your primary learning tools.

Using grammar as one of your primary learning tools includes: memorizing rules and sentences. Don't do that. Use it as a reference if something is unclear to you.

There is a guy from Effortless English (you can sign up to his newsletter and get all these tips for free) that teaches you this. I highly recommend him if you already have somewhat of a grasp of the English language and can understand what I'm saying!

And finally, if you have chosen the third option

I must ask you a serious question...

What the hell are you looking for here? Do you read the title? It says "learn basic English". Get out of here! (just kidding).

I have some stuff for you too.

I've been in your shoes a while ago. The best advice I can give you to reach intermediate or even advanced level is what you hear it almost every single day: Surround yourself with the language.

Today, it's easy to find English movies, TV shows...they are literally EVERYWHERE. If you are not used to watching them, try reading English books or articles like this one...heck, the internet is almost 90% English! (if you ask me). Going to a foreign country where English is a native language is also a HUGE advantage according to some people. The best way to know if this is right or not is to try and test these principles on yourself.

Surround yourself with the language for at least 4 weeks.. See if you notice any improvements. See what works and keep on doing that.

Good luck!

Learn English Resources

Of course, the necessary part in order to be successful in this is having the right resources. For beginning, check out Using English, it's a good one.
