Why knitting?
Knitting is big with this generation. In the past knitting was associated with grannies but that has changed in a big way. From DIY chicks to young women embracing a greener lifestyle, the average age of the knitter has plummeted. Still, that doesn't make it any easier to learn, so don't just learn how to knit because it's considered "cool" right now. Knitting takes work so make sure it's a skill you really want.
Which knitting method? Continental vs English
With the english method, the needle with the stitches is held in the left hand, and the yarn is held in the right. The yarn has to be "thrown" from the right to the left. Since knitting is quite repetitive, having to throw the yarn is not optimal. Looks like a recipe for carpal tunnel to me.
With the continental method, the needle with the stitches is held in the left hand, as is the yarn. This means that there is no wasted movement.
Either method works, but the english method is more popular than continental. English method requires less refined motor skill than continental (making it easier to teach to children), so that may be part of the reason. Go with your gut and choose the method that appeals to you the most.
