About The French Language

French is a Romance language originally spoken in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, and today by about 300 million people around the world as either a native or a second language, with significant populations in 54 countries.

Descended from the Latin of the Roman Empire, along with languages such as Spanish, Italian, Catalan, Romanian, and Portuguese, its development was influenced by the native Celtic languages of Roman Gaul and by the Germanic language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders.

It is an official language in 41 countries, most of which form what is called in French La Francophonie, the community of French-speaking nations. French as a foreign language is the second most frequently taught language in the world, after English.

It is an official or administrative language of the African Union, the European Broadcasting Union, ESA, the European Union, the Council of Europe, FIA, FIFA, ICUP, FINA, IHO, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, the International Court of Justice, the International Olympic Committee, the International Political Science Association, the International Secretariat for Water, Interpol, NATO, the UCI, the United Nations and all its agencies (including the Universal Postal Union), the World Anti-Doping Agency, and the World Trade Organization. Along with English it is the most used language in the European Commission.

English is my native language and I've spent a good part of the last 5-6 years studying Spanish. I don't have many opportunities to speak it, but I think I could manage in a Spanish speaking area. I get lot's of opportunities through a local paper, several cable networks and online sources to practice my listening/reading comprehension and pick up new words. I've found spaced Repition Software to be invaluable for expanding the vocabulary and have been using that for almost a year which has really pushed me out of a plateau that I felt I had reached.

I've studied some French for a trip to Montreal and I'm thinking about resuming my French studies after a little more time with my intensive focus on Spanish.

In college I studied German and would have really loved to continue if I had the time in my schedule (it may be on my list after French).

Beyond that I just know a few words in Italian (crossover similarities from Spanish and musical vocabulary...) and a VERY few words in Mandarin.

Languages though are a fascination of mine since I was very young.
