Putting Drills For Simple Putting
Why isn't putting simple, it should be! After all, it's such a simple action. Just calm back and forth motion is all it
needs. Okay, I may be making it sound a little simpler than it is here, but wouldn't it be great if in fact it was
that simple? Well, it can and will be that simple if you put into action the following putting drills and instructions:
1. The One Hander
Tiger Woods uses this warm up technique a lot and look what it's doing for him at the moment. Tiger finds that it
makes his leading hand feel more confident when he uses just his right hand to putt with before he goes out onto the
course. He says it promotes both confidence in the stroke and feel in the lead putting hand.
Now, to do this one handed putting stroke, you must practice at lengths and not be scared of putting in a little wrist action.
It will probably seem a little daunting at first, but in time it will come to you and you will start to realise the motion is very
natural. Make sure as you stroke you stay tension free and loose, as this will promote a more natural stroke and better
feel of the ball.
2. The Rhythm
Now, if you've ever watched pro play golf you've more than likely seen that their putting stroke is very smooth and in sync.
This calm swaying motion eliminates any uneven motions that can lead to over hitting the ball or under hitting it. The
smoother the stroke the more chance you have of getting a clean connection.
A great way of developing a stroke that is in sync is to practice using what's known as a metronome. A metronome is an object
that produces a consistent sound with equal spaces between each. A clock is an ideal metronome for a putting stroke as it
gives out sounds that are perfect for the motion. When you here the tick your putter should be at the top of the backswing
ready to come down again. On the tock the putter should be at the end of your follow through.
Once you have begun to get used to the rate of your stroke you can then begin to apply it your putts on the course.
3. Hitting the Sweet spot is the key
One consistent characteristic of a pro golfer is the overwhelming gift they have of consistently hitting the ball on
its sweet spot. Hitting the ball so consistently in the middle of the club face and the middle of the ball will produce a great
shot 95% of the time. Now, when a putt isn't hit in the middle of the putter face the ball tends to veer quite horrible off line.
To eliminate this you have to learn to hit the ball at the centre of the putter face every time. A tip for training yourself to do
this would be to wrap a bunch of elastic bands around the putter head so that they straddle the middle of the putter face.
Once you can hit the centre of the putter every time you can begin to take it off to see if you can continue your consistent
hitting. If you begin to hit with toe or the heel of the putter again you should put the elastic bands back on again until
you start to hit the centre again.
