Sleight of Hand Magic

Sleight of Hand Magic Tricks

Sleight of hand magic tricks are the basis of entertainment magic. The ability to make things apparently appear and disappear, change, etc., all depend on sleight of hand. If you work on your dexterity and ability to present one appearance while actually doing something else, you will be well on your way to creating a strong ability to practice sleight of hand.

In sleight of hand magic tricks you will use set and specific hand motions to manipulate your props. These are usually cards, coins, and other small objects. With sleight of hand magic tricks you can create specific effects that suspend your audience’s disbelief. You can encourage them to see your trick as you wish them to see it.

You will convince your audience to see your trick the way you want it to be seen. A very big part of this is understanding that people see what they want to see, so what you want must be based in what your audience expects to see! With sleight of hand magic tricks, you can help them do just that. Sleight of hand magic tricks take time and patience to master, but once you have, you will find yourself able to convince your audience of pure magic!

Sleight of hand magic tricks are based in very specific actions. There are seven specific moves that make up sleight of hand magic tricks . First is ‘palming’. This is the most commonly used technique. When palming, you hide an object in your hand, while giving the appearance of having empty hands! The ‘steal’ is another very often used sleight of hand magic trick. This method allows you to procure a necessary object without anyone knowing about it.

‘Ditching’ is one of the sleight of hand magic tricks magicians use quite frequently. In this method, you can discard an item you no longer need, and no one will be the wiser. You can also move objects surreptitiously from one place to another in a technique called ‘loading’. If you want to give the audience the impression that an event has occurred when it actually has not, you would use a technique called ‘simulation’.

Through ‘misdirection’ a magician performs a series of actions to distract the audience. While under cover of this distraction, the magician can make a secret move. Misdirection is a sleight of hand magic trick that allows the magician to hide his actions an prevent the audience from figuring out his tricks. To exchange one object for another, you will use a sleight of hand magic tricks known as ‘switching’. This allows you to replace one item with another secretly.

If you do a lot of street magic, you will want to be very skilled in sleight of hand magic tricks. When your audience is close at hand, it is important that your actions be very smooth and sure. You will also use sleight of hand magic tricks in stage magic, but you will have a bit of distance between you and the audience in this case, so it won’t be quite as crucial.

Technique in Doing Magic Tricks

Performing magic tricks has been a popular form of entertainment for ages. Of course there are certain types of magic that are truly mysterious and secret, but many simply involve quick hands and a practiced technique in doing magic tricks. These types of tricks are actually mere sleight of hand. They are the most commonly used by the greatest number of illusionists.

Most of what we call magic is actually simple misdirection. Sometimes it even involves deception or the magician being in cahoots with an audience member known as a shill. This type of magic is not supernatural or occult. It is merely baffling to a large number of people. It is a style of magic that is very greatly dependant on your having a smooth technique in doing magic tricks.

Production magic is another story. This is a magic trick based in the illusion of creating something from nothing. You have seen it a hundred times. Production magic is pulling rabbits out of hats and coins out of ears. This technique in doing magic tricks is often quite astounding to the audience. They feel that it must surely be impossible. Where did that rabbit come from? Only you know the answer to that question!

A truly baffling and amazing technique in doing magic tricks is teleportation. With this fabulous technique, the magician is able to cause things to move from place to place. So one audience members’ ring may end up in the magician’s pocket all the way across the room. A singing canary might suddenly find itself looking out through the glass of a light bulb. Even more baffling and astounding is transposition. In this technique in doing magic tricks the magician causes two items to change places. This is achieved by simultaneous teleportation. This technique in doing magic tricks is also known as double teleportation.

In levitation, the magician causes himself or some object to float in the air. Audiences marvel at this technique in doing magic tricks and find it very impressive. With this technique in doing magic tricks, the crowd is awed by floating tables, balls, and volunteers. This is all seemingly done without cables, wires, or any other device. This popular magic trick is a perennial favorite with magic aficionados.

Restoration delights any audience. With this technique in doing magic tricks, you (the destructive magician) destroy something that seems to be beyond repair. You tear up a newspaper, you cut up a rope, you saw your assistant in half! Then, voila! You put it all back together again, good as new! This technique in doing magic tricks always makes the crowd happy! Once you have done your homework and learned the basics of good magic, you will have no trouble mastering this popular technique.

Types of Magic Tricks

There are many types of magic tricks, but the purpose of all of them is to dazzle and amaze. Magic can be done for an audience of one or an audience of thousands. No matter what the venue, the hope remains the same. When you are done, you want the audience to jump to their feet, give you a standing ovation, and walk away scratching their heads and wondering how on earth you did it.

If you have a signature types of magic tricks, that is a kind that everyone associates with you, you will have a head start on amazing your audience. The reason is, they will come in wondering how you will top your last performance, and the anticipation will set them up to be amazed. If you outdo yourself, they will be that much more astonished and pleased. If you specialize in one type of magic, you can keep building on your success. If you jump around from one thing to another, it can take a lot longer to become truly skillful.

The most common of the many types of magic tricks is stage magic. You may also have heard this called stand-up magic or platform magic. This is magic you may do in the local high school auditorium or in Carnegie Hall. Either way, it’s the same. Your audience will be expecting a formal show using a lot of props. You will be able to do tricks that use quite a bit of sleight of hand because your audience will be at a standard distance from you.   You may choose to challenge yourself by practicing a little street magic. This type of magic tricks uses very few small props. It is very challenging because it is practiced randomly in the street, as the name suggests. You would simply practice your magic and hope to attract and amaze passersby. You will need a lot of skill and a lot of panache to perform this sort of up-close magic successfully. Your audience will literally be close enough to touch, and you will have to keep them fooled.

If you are physically fit and up for a real challenge, you may want to give escapology or escape magic a try. As the name suggests, this magic is dependent upon your being able to get yourself out of a tight spot. These are the types of magic tricks that involve untying yourself underwater, magically reappearing after being locked in a coffin, and so on. It takes a special set of talents to master this type of magic tricks.

Of course, there are also predictive and intellectual types of magic tricks. One of these is mentalism. You may know this better as mind reading. A mentalist is one who has the ability to make predictions, read minds, and perhaps even control thoughts. A mentalist can practice his trade one-on-one or for a large audience.

One of the predictive, intellectual types of magic tricks is the theatrical séance. This is a staged event that uses mediumistic and spiritualistic methods for show, but it is not actually a spiritual event. When creating this type of magic trick, the magician seems to be conjuring up spirits. In stage magic, this is purely for entertainment purposes; however, this type of magic trick has gotten a bad reputation due to unscrupulous artists attempting to dupe people.

Magic Card Tricks and Card Marking

Magicians have traditionally used card tricks to enchant their audiences. The use of magic cards is one of the most popular of illusions. People are amazed and fascinated with the wonderful tricks a good magician can do with a seemingly ordinary deck of cards. The tricks seem to be endless, from finding a card in hiding to picking the card the participant mentions, to making a card disappear in a puff of smoke, they are all enjoyable. What you must know as an aspiring magician is that you will almost never use an ordinary deck of cards. To be a good illusionist you need to be versed in magic card tricks and card marking.

Of course, the audience must continue to believe that your deck is just an ordinary deck of playing cards. Actually , the cards illusionists us are specially designed and prepared just for performing tricks. There are a variety of ways to prepare or mark a special deck for tricks. Of course you can buy a deck that is designated a trick deck, but a good illusionist or magician naturally has a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to magic card tricks and card marking.

When you mark cards, you will need to find or devise a system of marking the backs of the cards so that you and only you will be able to tell the suit, color, and number of the card from the back. Naturally, you don’t want anyone else to be able to read or even see your markings! By coming up with an effective marking system, you can transform an ordinary deck into a unique magic deck that only you can read.

There are some modern ways to mark cards that rely on what is called shade technology. For example, luminous marked cards use shade technology. By wearing a special set of sunglasses or contact lenses, the magician can see the markings on the card, which cannot be seen with the naked eye. People who do not have their vision enhanced in this manner will not be able to see the markings on the cards.

Card marking can also be built into the design of the cards. These may have very minute markings that only the magician will notice. One must study to know what these markings mean. The markings are often so minute that the magician must wear eyeglasses to see them. Understand that these marks would be invisible to someone who had not studied the markings. Even so, the magician must be able to read them even when the deck is being held by someone else at a distance.

You will want to beware of the gambler’s riffle. This is a tricky maneuver is designed to unveil marked cards. A person who is trying to determine whether or not your cards are marked might riffle or shuffle them to find out quickly.

This works on the same principle as cartoon books that seem to have pictures that move when you flip through the pages. The markings on marked cards will appear to jump around on the backs when the cards are riffled. Be careful of this, as it will even work if you have marked your cards with small pinholes or little dents.
