Many people find the thought of learning the guitar quite frightening. It just looks like there is so much to take in, that you’d never have time to learn it all. Everybody starts learning the guitar for a different reason. Many peole have dreams of becoming a professional guitarist. Many people dream of writing they own, original compositions. Others simply want to be able to play their favourite tunes at home. The very first thing you need to decide is weather to play acoustic or electric guitar. The sort of music you most want to learn will normaly be the deciding factor here. Electric guitars can be a bit easier to play than acoustics due to their lighter strings, but they do require additional equipment, like leads and an amp. Acoustics have the advantage of being able to be played, and heard anywhere.

When you’ve decided on a guitar, you’ll then need to decide if you you’re going to have lessons, or learn to play using books or videos. If you enlist the help of a tutor it will clearly be more costly than learning on your own, but you will have somebody to show you exactly what to do. Teaching yourself is cheaper, and can be great if you can stay disciplines, but it easy to develop bad habits, and incorrect playing techniques when learning this way.

Whichever route you deicide to go, you’ll most likely start off by learning some chords.Strumming chords constitutes the back bone of a large amount of music for the guitar. Being able to play a few chords accurately and cleanly will enable you to start playing some of your favourite songs straight away.

There is only really one way to become a great guitar play, and that is  practice. But there’s more to practice than meets the eye. If you don’t follow the correct practice methods you will not progress as quickly as you should. You should always aim to play and practise things as cleanly and as accurately as possible. You should try to play every note in accurately, using a metronome to keep in time.
