DIABETES--A SILENT KILLER
DIABETES--A SILENT KILLER

Finding Out You Have Diabetes Will Change Your Life

I have Diabetes. I don't want it but there it is, controlling my life 24/7, 365 days a year. It will remain with me until I die. I hate remembering the day I was told that I had this silent killer, this controller of life, existing inside me and what it could do to me if I ignored it.

MAKE A PLAN
MAKE A PLAN

So to defeat this killer I devised a plan-- a plan to control this thing trying to kill me, a plan to co-exist with it on a daily basis.

Diet becomes the main focus of existence-how many carbs and proteins can I have per meal, per day. I studied books on the subject from different ways of eating healthy to cookbooks for the Diabetic. I went to classes and had discussions with a dietitian.

I explored the Internet for articles on Diabetes. I looked for different regimes like vitamins, minerals, herbs and organics that might help me slow this ticking bomb inside me.

EXERCISE WHEITHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!
EXERCISE WHEITHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!

Exercise is now mandatory, not just something I'll get around to doing someday. I have to get my weight down and keep it down. I have to exercise to help keep my blood sugar levels down, as well as my blood pressure, another side affect of my new disease.

Then there's my new friend the glucose meter. I must monitor my blood sugar 3-4 times a day no matter where I am. This means learning to remember to bring it with me when I go out as well as any meds or insulin I'm now taking.

ALWAYS HAVE A SNACK HANDY

One thing I never leave home without is a snack like hard candy, crackers or glucose tablets in case my sugar drops. Another is a medic alert of some kind in case of an emergency. Something that says I'm a Diabetic and what meds I'm on.

YOU CAN STILL GO OUT WITH FRIENDS
YOU CAN STILL GO OUT WITH FRIENDS

I still have a social life like dining out but I have to watch what I am eating as well as the portion sizes. I have a glass of wine but just one. I must remember that food is still food no matter where I am and approach it just as if I were at home planning my carbs and proteins for that meal and that day.

DIABETES IS ALWAYS WAITING FOR YOU TO SLIP UP!
DIABETES IS ALWAYS WAITING FOR YOU TO SLIP UP!

The alternative to ignoring my Diabetes is having it take another step toward ever-tighter control of my life. If I start to ignore this disease and my plan to control it, Diabetes will delight in raising all kinds of mischief in my body from trouble with my eyes, kidneys, nerves, blood pressure, hearing, loss of a foot or leg, to a stroke and heart disease.

IT COMES IN MANY DISGUISES!
IT COMES IN MANY DISGUISES!

Diabetes is always there in many disguises, waiting for me to forget about it, to lose my control over my life.

YOUR FUTURE CAN BE A BRIGHT ONE IF YOU STICK TO YOUR PLAN

You can foil Diabetes if you make a plan and live by it. You can live a normal life with few restrictions. For most Diabetics the quality of their new life will depend on how much responsibility they take for their own care and how much control they take over their life and future. A future that can be bright with careful planning and self-control.
