Learning with Lego!

Though they are easily the number one most painful toy to step on with bare feet, Legos are great fun when it comes to learning! Building with Lego blocks can enhance learning in a number of different ways…and all in the guise of good fun.

Studies show that children forge new brain connections when building with blocks. Spatial concepts, cause-and-effect, and fine motor skills are all developed while stacking blocks.

More Permanent Structures

One of the most frustrating events for a toddler is when his carefully constructed tower or block house comes tumbling down (before he meant to demolish it on purpose!) Because Legos interlock, there are fewer accidental demolition jobs, and big-brother earthquake won’t even shake ‘em loose!

Legos for All Ages

Legos come in a variety of sizes, suitable for children under three years of age, to adults. DUPLO blocks are larger, and safe for small children. They are easier for little hands to manipulate, as well. Standard Legos are great for children three and older.

For older children, Bionicles and special play sets inspire creativity. It has even been speculated that some Lego sets (Star Wars sets, in particular) could possible be purchased by parents who want to join in the fun! The more, the merrier!

Patterns and Math Skills

Because Legos come in a variety of bright colors, kids can also stack them into patterns. Far from the basic primary colors, you can now purchase blocks in almost every imaginable shade of pastel, bright or muted colors. While making patterns, kids are working on math skills and problem-solving.

Play Sets

Many Lego sets come with Lego people and themes. For instance, the Lego Community Workers Set includes policemen, firefighters, construction workers, doctors, and many other community members. This set, and other play sets, encourage creativity and imaginative play. Some of the best toys are those that can be played with in more than one way, and Lego blocks fulfill that requirement.

Building Sets

Lego building sets are also available in different quantities. Depending on how many Legos you have, you can build a house or a town. Or perhaps a whole world! The beauty of building sets is that the possibilities are endless. Build bridges, homes, or cities. You can build play swords, or eating utensils. If you can imagine it, you can probably build it with Legos.

Wheels and Gears

Some Lego sets come with assorted wheels, gears or axels for even more fun. Build race cars, planes or trains. Host your own Lego Car Derby! Lego action figures have even more fun when they have transportation, and your kids learn even more about cause-and-effect and physics when wheels are involved.
