Learning to Drive

Two years back, I went through the experience of having some driving lessons in a local driving school. The experience was initially tedious, but nevertheless, it went out smoothly towards the end. I actually didn’t need the driving lessons anyway as I already knew how to drive long before I was old enough to get a license. But then I needed the driving school certificate that says I am already skilled enough to navigate the busy city roads, and that I won’t be liability not only to traffic policemen, but to pedestrians and other drivers as well.

I can still remember how the lessons went through. I didn’t take it seriously back then; driving to me was like a game. Sitting in front of the steering wheel was not so different from sitting in front of a classic racing arcade game. After a few serious reminders from my teacher however, I definitely felt the heavy responsibility of handling a vehicle on the road.

We didn’t spend a lot of time on an empty parking lot where I was supposedly going to know every part of the dashboard, and learn how to make the car move from an initial stationary position. The challenge came in when I finally had the chance to drive through streets with cars around.

I had a good time during the whole duration of the city driving part. I always dreamed of being a race car driver and I felt that this was a good start for me. I even attributed things on the road as equipments on a race track. I was pretending that street lights were racing flags since they carry the same function anyway. I also pretended that we were running as fast as an F1 car when in reality, we were too slow. Sometimes driving lessons get boring to the point that you wish you were racing to the checkered flag.
