Prayer is a conversation with God. It is exactly like any conversation you may have with another person. The difference is that you are talking to the Supreme Being of the Universe. When you first begin to pray you are like a baby taking those first stammering words. Soon you get the hang of it and you begin making sentences. Then you make paragraphs and so on.
Through prayer you are able to change your world. As you become more adept at praying you enlarge your reach to effect change in the larger world. Before any of this happens you must have faith. Many people think you have to come to God with formal prayers that were written by those who knew God intimately. This is not true. But...you must have the desire to know God intimately! This is the most important requirement for the beginner.
Faith is at the core of the Christian experience. Hebrews 11:1 states, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. That means that your belief that something you have asked of God will happen is so strong that you are able to reach into nothingness and pull your need into the real world.
James 4: 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. NKJV
This is a profound scripture. What is meant by asking amiss? Asking God to provide your needs is not the same as asking for your wants. There are those among us who believe that living for God means that God will bless you with great riches. I do not find that the scripture bears this out. James was not only speaking about money. He was also speaking about pleasures. While I do not believe that God wants us to live miserably unhappy lives, He is not going to make every one of us wealthy. We should not judge those who have hard times as if they are not living right!
There should never come a time in the life of a believer when he or she cannot give their burdens to the Lord. However, if your prayers never reach beyond your personal concerns you are not enlarging your reach or moving up the ladder toward intimate knowledge of God.
James 5: 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. NKJV
You must be honest and open in your relationships. Take care not to harm or hurt one another by harsh words or actions. When you have hurt someone, apologize and make it right. With a sensitive nature that cares for others you will keep open and honest relationships that make for easy communication with God. When you pray one for another God heals and delivers. Needs are met, and souls are added to the church!
This is the first step to praying effectively.

I like that you say prayer is a conversation with God.
I personally believe that God is not responsible for as much as we make Him out to be. I think our actions and the consequences of our actions are responsible for much of what happens in our lives. However! I do believe that Gad can work through us despite ourselves (thank goodness).
Prayer - like conversation - is one of the basic "getting to know you" principles. From there the possibilities are endless
Duchess, I agree with you although I am a strong believer in prayer. On the opposite side of the fence I feel strongly that the devil gets the blame for a most of the things we bring on ourselves by our actions!
We also need to know WHEN God has answered prayer.
Sometimes He says, "Yes, you may have it." "No, this is not good for you." "Wait, I have something better." or "My grace is sufficient for you."
God doesn't always give us exactly what we ask for. He has the right to say no according to His wisdom.
Judydianne, you are absolutely right. Many people do not understand this and think that every time they pray the answer is yes. It is not!
You are a very annointed and gifted writer. Your article touched on several important issues - forgiveness, dilligence, and honesty. Please keep giving us more.
Thank you so much. Prayer is very close to my heart!
Smireles thanks for a great hub. You are right that there should never be a time we cannot pray. There have been times in my life that I could only pray "Lord have mercy on me" and Oh my he took it from there. God bless you.
This is a wonderful message. I should pray much more than I do. Some have never been taught to pray at all. I hope this helps a lot of people draw closer to God and realize the power He can have in their lives.
God has always been faithful to me. Prayer is an important part of my life. I hope my hub will help those who do not know how to pray. Thank you Coffeesnob and James!
nice and true good hub
Thank you, Lgali!
Smireles you have written a great informative HUB. I often use prayer in a conversational manner. I do try to follow the answer given by our Lord and Savior Jesus when He was asked, "Lord teach us how to pray.". This does not necessarily mean to recite the Lords Prayer, but the elements contained within the Lords Prayer give us guidelines as to the type of prayer God listens to when we pray.
Praise of God and His glory is the expression beginning The Lords Prayer.
Surrendering our Earthly will and subbmitting to Gods will is an essential element of successful prayer.
Asking for our daily sustenance, not excessive Earthly treasure, is an element in successful prayer.
Praying for forgiveness of our trangressions with the condition the we too are willing to forgive the transgressions of others is essential to successful prayers.
Although not implicitly stated I truly believe that all successful prayer begins with thankfulness to God for our very existance, and the privledge of being aware of the glory of His Creation.
If one wants to pray for a specific personal miracle, always remember to state "Thy will be done".
If we pray and follow the words and beliefs, in our actions, of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we will experience the greatest miracle imaginable. That miracle being eternal life with God and our Lord and savior.
