Learning Classical Guitar Music
72Classical music played on the acoustic guitar
Classical guitar music is seen by alot of people as being somehow inaccesible without years of study. But the term "clasical music" is very broad, and when put together with the guitar, it could refer as much to Latin music or The Beatles as to music from two hundred years ago! If you weren't seduced by the electric guitar during your childhood or teen years, what is it that attracts you to classical guitar music? Is it the delicacy of the Elizabethan dance music? The rich and vibrant sound of a great classical guitar? Maybe you'd like to dazzle and delight an audience like John Williams or Julian Bream.
The "classical" period for music is from the mid eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century. One of the principal composers from this period is Johann Sebastian Bach who has a strong connection to classical guitar as he was a favorite of Andres Segovia, a pioneer in the tradition of transcribing classical music to the guitar.
To watch artists such as Bream or Segovia playing may be more than a little intimidating for the aspiring guitarist, but the main requirement for learning classical guitar music is time. If you are prepared to devote some time to studying music and guitar technique, then your natural talent will show itself.

If it ain't Baroque . . .
The Baroque era stretches from 1600 to 1750, and composers who lived in this era such as bach or Vivaldi are still popular with classical guitar players. Gaspar Sanz and Robert de Visee were two composers who wrote for the guitar.

Romantic guitar
1820 to 1910 is called the Romantic period by musicologists. If you look in classical guitar music collections you will find works of famous composers like Brahms, Beethoven or Paganini but the most trascribed composer from this era would have to be Isaac Albeniz who composed for the piano. A very popular composer for the guitar was Francisco Tarrega, but there are many others who lived around this time such as: Dionisio Aguado, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdindo Carulli, Mauro Giuliani and Fernando Sor.
