When it comes to domestic cleaning, women all over the world hesitate taking the first step since it takes a lot of time and effort to clean exquisite carpets, draperies, upholstery, etc. Different cleaning methods are used to clean different types of carpets, curtains and upholstery. In this article we shall learn how to go ahead with leather furniture and upholstery cleaning.

Tips for Cleaning Leather Furniture

Fully Treated Leather: Fully treated leather also known as pigmented or semi-aniline leather is the most common type of leather used for furniture. This type of leather is easy to clean as well as easy to tear. To clean it, use a feather duster with gentle hands to wipe off the dust. Prepare a solution with two parts of water and one part of hand soap liquid and apply it on the furniture with a damp sponge. You will notice your furniture looking shimmering once again. Furniture cleaners available in market are costlier and may not come out to be very beneficial. White vinegar and water solution can be used for dealing with a trickier stain.

Distressed and Sauvage Leather: Typically softer, thicker and more durable than fully treated leather, pull up aniline and full aniline can also be treated with the same solution of water and hand soap liquid as mentioned above. However, one should be very careful while cleaning them since their water absorbing capacity is high. Use a sponge that is not too wet to clean distressed and sauvage leather furniture. You can also use leather conditioner once or twice a year for better results.

Suede or Nubuck: Suede is a little more challenging and trickier to clean as compared to other types of leather. Rub the suede furniture and upholstery with a soft dry towel to remove surface dirt. For removing stains, use four sided fingernail buffer along with a large stiff horsehair paintbrush (preferably with a suede brush) or a white drafting eraser. Make sure that you do not use excess of moisture to clean suede as it may get damaged severely. Suede specific conditioners are also available in the market and can be used once or twice or year.

Ink Stains: Ink stains on leather can be wiped out completely by using a hairspray. However, deeper stains require professional help to get removed.

Grease Stains: Grease stains can be dealt with by applying talcum powder and corn starch.

Leather is sensitive and soft and should not be exposed to direct sunlight for drying or cleaning purposes. Also, using harsh chemicals, excessive water and scrubbing can damage your leather upholstery beyond repair. A wrong chemical can cause permanent discoloration or damage to your leather coverings.

There are lot of risks involved in home cleaning your leather furniture and upholstery. Hence, it is advised to seek help from professional carpet cleaners when it comes to leather furniture and upholstery cleaning. Professional cleaners make use of different methods and equipments so that your leather furniture, coverings and upholstery can look new again.
