Leather Sofas - Guide to buying the perfect leather sofa
80The main reason for buying a leather sofa of course if for the style that it brings to almost any room. Leather sofas – whether they are black, white, red or some other colour – can fit into most rooms decors quite comfortably and be very comfortable to boot! Of course they can also be quite expensive – ranging from $700 to several thousand dollars on the internet although not all are this expensive. In fact for some of the cheap ones you can buy them for just a few hundred dollars so they are in most people’s price range.
When you are buying a new sofa you should always take the time to find one that is a good quality even if it means paying a bit more as they are not something you want to be buying regularly!
Even though you want to go for quality most of the time, there are some that are cheaper than others and still retain a level of quality that competes with more expensive models. According to a dealer of leather sofas Hancock & Moore and Leathercraft are both great companies to go with when buying your sofa, but companies such as Bradington-Young are not quite as high quality but at a lesser price.
Are they as comfortable?
One of the most common complaints about leather sofas is that they are cold when you sit on them and hence not as comfy. While it is true that compared to fabric sofas leather ones won’t be as snug when you first sit down, but after a few minutes of sitting they will have warmed up to a temperature that will make you feel right at home. In reality this isn’t a real problem and only something people notice when making the transition from softer fabric to leather.
Apart from that there is no reason why a leather sofa or chair won’t be as comfortable as a fabric one and it really comes down to who made it and how much it cost.
Remember – you do get what you pay for nearly 100% of the time when it comes to furniture!
Cats, Dogs and leather
If you have a cat then you might be worried about whether your brand new leather sofa and it will get along! You don’t want your new sofa ruined within a few days by a cat with overly sharp claws after all. This is a real concern especially when the cat is a kitten, but as it gets older as long as you keep it out of the room when you are not around it should be OK. When it is a kitten though it is a lot less likely to be able to hold its footing on the slippery leather surface and hence scratches are much more common. Keeping nails short is a good idea of course although doesn’t eliminate the problem.
You could also try providing a scratching pole for the cat so it is less inclined to try and shorten its nails on your sparkling brand new sofa.
The great thing about having a leather sofa with a pet such as a cat or dog is that the hair won’t stick to it like it will other kinds of material and any fur that is on the sofa will be easy to clean up. Anyway who has had a cat with a fabric sofa will no doubt know what I mean!
Caring for a leather sofa
Whether you have an Italian leather sofa, black leather sofa or a different kind you need to take care of it. In general you should try and buy a cleaner made specifically for leather otherwise you risk damaging it. You shouldn’t use saddle soap in most cases like many people say you should, and if you are in doubt about how to clean it you should contact the manufacturer who will be able to advise you on the best way to keep it clean.
If you have a stain on the sofa – which inevitably you will at some point especially if you have kids – you can try getting it out with just a bit of water. If that doesn’t work after it has dried you can use leather cleaner.
The only time you shouldn’t use water is if you have some kind of grease stain on the sofa in which case you need to let it settle and then see a leather cleaning professional who will be able to evaluate the stain if it is still visible.
It is often best to get in a professional if you aren’t sure what to do otherwise you risk causing damage to an extremely expensive item when you could pay a small amount of money to have the job done properly.

That's sound advice! The manufacturer will definitely have the correct information on how to take care of the particular kind of leather the sofa is made of.
