The City Center

In the city center, it is a pleasure to walk.In fact, one does not have any other choice than to walk .Vehicles are not permitted to ply on specific streets .For example, the Albion street.

Usually such roads are paved with natural stones.Benches are provided on both sides. There are singers performing on the street.

Once I observed one young lady playing violin.Amplifiers were connected to the violin and were arranged neatly on the side. She sat on a chair.I think she was playing some popular melodies .The violin box was kept just near by and it was kept open. Some by passers were putting coins in the violin box.So, if you like, you put coins otherwise just walk past.there is no demanding no begging.
What I remembered is one gentle man singing in the city center on Sundays.Always accompanied by a dog.The old person had even made an arrangement to position his mouth organ near his mouth. He had trained his dog that on particular points during the song, the dog would just say bark " boohoo".people always stood there to watch this joint act .

Buildings at Leeds

There is a place called the Town hall.

I have never been inside the town hall. This is a very old building. What I really enjoy is the outside of this historical building. There is a big chess board marked on the floor. You can see people plying chess here.

The shopping at Leeds

All stores have the automatic cash machines.Quite simple to operate. In this machine, you need to deposit your shopping tray on the right side.Take out each item one after another.Show the bar code to the computer eye.It registers the item, displays the price in the list.when all items have been shown to the machine, it shows the total amount. If you want to give cash to the machine, just take out the appropriate currency note and put it in the slot.Immediately, it shall show how much change it has to give you back. The change shall be given to you.No need to count it.The transaction receipt is given.Even in the receipt, it is mentioned that which currency note was given how much change has been given. There are polythene bags kept on the machine, take one, put the goods in the bag and just walk out of the stores.there is no security checking the bill, the bag and stamping etc.

Selling tobacco products and alcohol to persons below the age of 18 years is a criminal offence. You shall find this signboard near the shelves of alcohol

" Be prepared to show your age proof if you are buying the alcohol"

I have seen that usually all tobacco related products are kept on the back side of the cash counter .So, for any tobacco product one has to ask the attending person to take out from the shelf and provide.

Even, the sharp objcets like Knives can not be sold to persons under the age of 18.

Shopping Experiences

Leeds People

People have the habit of eating their meals on public benches .You shall always find a bench along with a litter box.So one is expected to have the meals sitting on the bench and deposit the litter in the litter box.And it is observed ,

If you walk along the water front, you shall come across old persons sitting with the fishing gear.
I never thought earlier that the fishing gear is such an elaborate affair. It comprises of so many items. What I have observed was this.one fishing rod, with fishing line, the live baits ( some kind of worm which are kept in a open box), some extension pieces of the fishing rod, the desk on which those person seat. This desk itself is an interesting object. It is a stool cum box .It is a steel box.On one side there are two metallic hooks for fixing the fishing rod.The rod is supported between these two hooks .So that the both hands are free. Then there is also one or two fishing nets .

There are teenagers doing lots of aerobatics on the outside. There are two walls separated about nine feet.Boys and girls can be observed jumping from one wall to the other.I really enjoyed this sight. It is certainly a welcome scene that youths instead of wasting the time in chatting or some thing like that are engaging themselves in some healthy pursuits.

The Traffic

The Streets:
The traffic needs a special mention here. For the pedestrians, there are walk ways created on each road. These are marked by double yellow lines on the carriage way.if you are within these two yellow lines, you are quite safe. There is a pavement done for the pedestrian traffic. This is rough surface.Mostly from natural stones. This pavement has been given slopes at the junction with the roads. This gives ease of operating a Pram or a disable chair or a hand cart.

Housekeeping at leeds

What I also liked here is the house keeping in the buildings.
You shall find the plastic crates in front of all buildings. All apartment owners keep on collecting the domestic garbage in black polythene bags day after day. When the black bag is full, it is deposited in the waste crates. These crates are regularly cleaned by the council .

The Bridges

There are many bridges .Old bridges as well as new bridges. The oldest bridge which I have seen is the Victoria bridge which is constructed around 1841 AD.this used to be a toll bridge .This was the only link between the city center and the near by areas (like hole beck).

The Cemetery

I also visited two cemeteries. What I really appreciated was that tombs as old as 1844, were kept in a state of order and maintenance. The tomb stone is readable and the area is quite neat & clean. There is greenery around.

The Neighbourhood police team (NPT)

I also liked the concept of NPT.Neighbourhood police team.A pair is identified ,Usually one female and one male officer who keep on patrolling on foot in their assigned area.
Leeds museum I enjoyed. What i really liked was that the visitors are allowed photography here.Only restriction is that flash gun may not be used. There is a place in the museum where a 900 years old mumy is preserved. In that section only photography is not allowed.
