Maletsunyane Falls

The falls are three times higher than Niagara Falls and the second highest in Southern Africa after the Tugela Falls in South Africa. This falls is near Semonkong and is also known as the place of smoke and if you like an adrenalin rush tries abseiling into the gorge.

Walk or pony trek to the Maletsunyane Falls and the unique Aloe Polyphylla. Enjoy the wild trout fishing, bird life and the great variety of flowers in the summer. Have a swim in the river or in the pool at the bottom of the falls. Pass by Basotho villages and stop for a beer or a chat. The Aloe Polyphylla is restricted to steep basaltic mountain slopes. Wild trout fishing, both rainbow and brown are possible on the Maletsunyane River, with the best spots upstream of the lodge and at the bottom of the waterfall.

Ha Baroana(Home of the Bushmen)

Ha Baroana meaning the home of the Bushmen. This is a vantage point over the Liphiring stream facing an overhanging rock about 40km east of Maseru. The San have left a magnificent gallery of rock paintings portrays the culture of this ancient people. There are also fine paintings of bushman life - hunting, dancing, and people in huts. From the main vantage-point, a trail zigzags down past the curator's huts to the stream, where you have to cross to gain access to the paintings.

Teyateyaneng

This is a town just north of Maseru and is renowned for its arts and crafts especially Lesotho's famous wool and mohair rugs and tapestries. Here you can also watch the women weavers as they work. On the outskirts of the town at St Agnes Mission you can buy some of the best tapestries in the country.

Malibamatso Bridge across the Katse Dam, near Ha Lejone

There is a fine vantage-point towards the elegant new Bridge which crosses the northern end of Lake Katse and the Intake Tower, and across the Lake itself. When the Lake is full it is very impressive. The area is a wonderful place for bird watchers, and is notable for the numbers of small montane birds - thrushes and buntings, which are present.

Matika Lisiu Pass

The top of this pass has a magnificent vantage-point from the car park facing down a dramatic deep valley towards Pitseng, and excellent views in the other direction across the high plateau towards Ha Lejone.

This area is renowned for seeing Bearded Vulture, and several other unusual montane birds are often seen, including Orange-breasted Rockjumper, as well as an attractive marmot-like rodent called locally an Ice Rat, which is endemic and found only at altitudes above 2000m.
