It's been a while

It's been a while since David Beckham became the who's who and the what's new in football. It happened when he went to the United States to play Major League Soccer. One of the major effects that he has done is the rise of football as a sport in a country where American Football and Basketball are the top dogs.

His move in the past made us think. "What were his intentions?" "Was he mad to leave one of the "best" clubs in the Spanish La Liga?" "Did he do it for the money? the fame?" "How much was he paid again?"

I think the main reason why LA Galaxy made an offer to David Beckham was because they wanted to be at the very front, when football has taken it's place as one of the top sports in the country. They wanted the sport to have more exposure.

It's quite logical actually. David Beckham is a cool looking guy, and he is a good player too. Just watch those crosses and free kicks swerving as he kicks them.

I think that David Beckham made a bold step towards promoting and making Football a favorite among Americans. He made a life-changing step to leave all the luxury he had in Europe to promote the sport in a haven of basketball, hockey, and american football fans.

Football in the Philippines?

It would surely increase the popularity of football here in the Philippines if some popular football star would promote it here. Haha. I can dream, can't I? The Younghusbands came here and they had the same effect, although in a smaller scale. Football didn't really kick it off bigtime, but their presence helped in helping it stand in the ranks of basketball. Slowly, more and more are opening their doors to something more than shooting hoops.

There is so much potential in the Filipino blood for football. All we need is to open our eyes and not be confined to being contented with watching basketball. It's only waiting to be tapped.

Come on folks! Move on! Give football in the Philippines a chance!

On a side note, here's a hopeful bit of information. Did you know that Barcelona FC's all-time scoring player was a Filipino? He is Paulino Alcantara and he rocked. He got scouted when he went to Spain and he started playing for Barcelona at age 15. He debuted with three goals to end the game. Isn't that something?

Check this blog out to know more about Paulino Alcantara. http://whatsnewfutball.blogspot.com
