So this is what it's like...

I started my new job this week (Jan 2, 2009). This is my first job out of college and my first office job. I have spent the last 6 years in retail. This hug thread will be a journal of sorts that will follow my new journey as I start a career and work in a cubicle. I have titled it "Life in a Cubicle" because I will be spending a lot of time at work. I know it will become part of my life, just as writing and being with my family (my husband and puppy).

I would like these posts to be an outlet for me to explore my new career and to be out there to help or inform and entertain other readers. I know there are a lot of people out there who work in a cubicle or small office. I hope this is entertaining for you. I would love it if cubicle workers could use this as a place to talk about their experiences and help each other make work more fun.

I already have some great ideas about how to decorate and organize my work space. If anyone else has any ideas, please feel free to share them here!

Don't forget to answer the question in the poll at the bottom of this page!

Overview

Here is an overview of my job. I am a Personal Assistant to the number 2 financial advisor for Barnum Financial Group, an office of MetLife. I will be working with the advisor and his team in almost all aspects of the job. The team is basically a small business of its own. We manage our own schedule and have our own clients. We have competitors (other agents and teams) and we have our own set of rules.

I really like the team and the parent company. I will not be behind my desk for 8 straight hours. I will have to run between my desk and other departments, such as operations and compliance. We also have to go to meetings at other locations. For example, I was in a town 30 min away last Friday for my first day, and will be in a town 45 min away next Monday at a great hall for a kickoff meeting. The hall we will be in is the same place my sister had her Prom. It is a nice place. I heard the meeting last year was a ton of fun.

I have to say I lucked out getting this job. I was lucky to find anything in this economy. I will be starting out part time for now until the economy picks up, but it will be more money than I was making at my last job, in retail.

I look forward to starting this job, learning about life, and sharing it with my readers. I hope you enjoy it and share your experiences with me.
