Life in Miami at Sunset

This is absolutely my favorite time of day to go to the beach. Just fills me with inspiration. As the sun begins to set in the west, the ocean sky offers gifts of songful color.

Yesterday afternoon the air was too fresh and the sky too inviting to sit at my computer, or even behind the wheel of my car, so I decided to walk the mile and a half to the beach (actually, I usually walk there, was just trying to be a little dramatic). Took a long stroll on the beach - photos to follow - and just before stepping off the boardwalk, saw this little vignette. Relaxing, isn't it?

Wining and Dining

  • Review | It's always party time at posh, pricey Mr. Chow

It's not every day you get an invitation to a fun, fancy, flirty party on South Beach, but at the sparkling Mr. Chow, you're on the guest list -- well, if you can afford it. - 6 days ago

  • Review | Fish dishes, specials star at lovely La Brochette

Aboud Kobaitri was born in Lebanon, apprenticed in a Paris restaurant, attended culinary school in Norway and now runs a little bistro in Cooper City. If his path to South Broward sounds curious, know that cooking isn't the chef's only love. - 6 days ago

  • Hearty sandwiches, late hours hit The Spot

Two huge, red, octagonal signs plastered to the front windows of The Spot scream ''Stop! Come in!'' -- especially at 5 a.m. if you're craving a meatball hoagie after night of clubbing. - 6 days ago

Superbowl Saturday. Back from trolling Ocean Drive inspite of the slight agoraphobia (is that like being a little bit pregnant?) that moved me to relocate here from NYC in the first place. Yes, it's just like they're reporting on the news, but more! Watching TV, you don't feel the pulsing of bodies bouncing all over you, the swelling of sounds spilling from every venue with the ocean roar marking the beat. Did I spot celebrities? Maybe... (More about that later).

you should make a hub for the build up to the Superbowl - the people and the build up, people-watching catches my interest although I had no idea the Superbowl was in Miami this year or even that it was due.

Thank you Iðunn. Well, today is Superbowl Day, and I truly believe all of us who live here are hiding indoors from the sporty throngs. We're having a rainy day (proof of Murphy's Law). But hey, if you're holding a ticket, the weather just doesn't matter. I'm one of those who watch for the commercials and for the half-time show (Prince!). Lucky me, a friend who's a wonderful chef have invited us over. It's a charmed life when you feel it so.

TODAY was one of those magical days of cool breezes and calm waters. I used to think only boring people talked about the weather. But it's a good conversation starter, anyway.   There's something about the sound of a boat whirring by, even though it breaks up the silent air that brings about a feeling of contentment. So much needs to be changed in this world; it helps to have a peaceful space in which to think of solutions.

Last night we sat for hours on my friend Ruthie's dock overlooking a sweeping canal in from Biscayne Bay, little lights punctuating the nightscape, and the Ursa Mayor preciding above. We munched on sushi and later, Camembert and crackers while sipping a deep, woodsy Lindemann cabernet. As Ruthie's two sweet boxers showered us with affection, we caughed up on each other's lives and reminisced about the years we worked together, before diving into dictatorial regimes and the anarchy by displacement they create. A quiet pause as we savored the coolness of the ocean's messengers and then, a splash and a light thud. Ronald was the first to notice a dolphin in our midst. We all stood up and opened our irises to the fins and flippers black on black, shinning by.

People who visit this page may have noticed that I recently added links to the Miami club scene as well as to the Miami Latin Film Festival. I must say, the latter is more revelant to my own lifestyle than the former, but that's because I'm a married lady. Not an old married lady, but married nevertheless. We tend to go to clubs when friends are visiting. The rest of the time (well, we do work, too) is spent on Lincoln Road at cafes like Books and Books and trattorias like the incredible La Lupa di Roma, at friends' homes, with my parents, at the movies, on Calle Ocho, or, mostly, curled up in jammies watching my favorite telenovela, "La Fea Mas Bella" and episodes of "Sex in the City", over and over. The Latin Film Festival, however, is a yearly pilgrimage, preceded by hours of pouring over the schedule, looking up reviews, renting reference films, phoning friends, planning dinners, and allowing for the possibility of club crawling after the films.

It's been cold here the last few days. Don't laugh, North Dakota! We've been wearing sweaters and turning on the space heaters. It's about...50? I'm not complaining. I like it. I bet you like 50 degrees in North Dakota, too. Tonight Ronald and I were coming home from dinner with my parents and swung a detour to check out the house we think Hulk Hogan lives in with his family... at least on the show "Hogan Knows Best". Yes, we're reality TV junkies. The Boat Show ended today, with the grand finale of fog horns that shakes us down every year... if you live near the water. Ah, the Boat Show. Traffic jams and crowed restaurants. But there's something so magestic about the endless array of yachting choices. Maybe next year...
