Ask Susan Peters Dog Food Review

There are no recalls or class action against Life's Abundance.

There have been several reported problems concerning the use of beet pulp in animal foods, including potential swelling in the stomach, palatability, and plugging of the intestinal villus.

Potatoes are not a necesary part of a cat or dog's diet. Potatoes convert to sugar in the digestion process which could lead to other health concerns for your pet.

Natural Flavor from what? Natural flavor is usually obtained by using the manure from what ever animal the pet food company is trying to push as the "flavor" of the product they have produced. In this case I would say the "natural flavor" is from chicken manure.

Brewers dried yeast is a by-product of making beer.

Total Score = Ol' Roy dog food, which is considered one of the poorest quality dog foods on the market, scored 5 out of 10. Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies and Adult Dog Food scored 8 out of 10.

The life span of your pet should be at least 20 years. Your pet's diet strongly influences your pet's life expectancy. Always look for a quality pet food which scores 10 out of 10.

Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies and Adult Dog Food - I consider to be a fairly good choice in pet foods.

Susan, what does the large red number following the brand name mean. IE: The 72 after Life's Abundance

Lance,

The large red number is a rating system Hubpages uses to show the popularity of each article written. The letter has nothing to do with the actual article.

Hi Susan,

I see that you deducted points from Kirkland Super Premium for having ingredients such as potato, beet pulp, brewers dried yeast, natural flavors, and animal fat (chicken fat in this case). Life's Abundance also has all these ingredients yet no points were taken. Life's Abundance even got an extra point for chicken meal while Kirdland Signature Super Premium received no point for having chicken as #1 and chicken meal as #2 ingredient. I just don't think you are being fair...

Sheree,

You caught me. This review of Life's Abundance is one of my older reviews. I've changed how I rate pet food since I wrote the review on this page.

I'll write a new review for Life's Abundance.

Life's Abundance should only be 7/10 since gluten only has a weight of 1 point. (Now that I am on a mission to find my baby a better food, I want to compare them fairly.) Thanks.

Sheree,

Sorry about the error. Gluten is worth only one point I had two written next to gluten though the total score is correct. Long days and short nights for me. Thanks for looking over my shoulder!

Susan, thanks for the GREAT reviews!! I REALLY appreciate that someone is helping all of us (pet owners) by breaking down the foods available and determining which ones are of good quality. I have recently discovered that I'm feeding my pups crap food =( and, in my quest to find the best, I have been eyeballing Eagle Pack and Life's Abundance. I was comparing your ratings of the 2 and they aren't equivalent comparison's...Life's Abundance was docked for chicken fat and dried beet pulp, but Eagle Pack was not. I'm thinking that the Eagle Pack review may be rated with your old method, that you referred to when responding to Sheree. Additionally, when I add the points for Life's Abundance, I only get a score of 6. Is that correct? THanks again!!

I see that the score of 8 is correct, minus one doesn't mean subtract a point that was earned, it simply takes away from the total possible. Sorry, you can disregard that part of my previous post. =)

Hillary,

I'll check on those Eagle Pack reviews for you. Thanks for helping me with the words of encouragement and eye for fairness. I've been working on reworking my older reviews but haven't gotten to them all.

Thanks,

Susan

Thanks Susan for all the help! I was wondering if these reviews include dangerous chemicals such as melamine and others. If there aren't any dangerous chemicals are they just not listed? Or are they not part of the review?

Thanks again!

Cheryl,

The companies do not list dangerous chemicals with the pet food ingredients. Most of the time the companies do not produce pet foods reflective of the ingredient lists provided for their products.

No, the dangerous chemicals are not part of the review. I have included recalls as part of the review.

Could you add reviews for Nature's Logic cat food please? And Orijen? I am considering these 2 and would like to see how they stack up against each other and others in the list, like Nature's Abundance.

THANKS!
