Lined Envelopes

If you want to send out something special in the mail you might be looking for lined envelopes. Lined envelopes are usually a decorative piece of paper or a printed part of the paper on an envelope that makes it look fancy. The liner goes inside of the envelope and is glued or printed on the flap side. When you open the envelope you should see the liner. Lined envelopes are great for wedding invitations and any type of formal occasion invitation. They are a really good way to tie the invitation colors and design to the envelope. The liners can be all sorts of colors and patterns too.

The problem I have found with lined envelopes is that there is not a large selection readily available that actually looks good. The envelopes that I have found that have liners tend to have colors that are matte or really shiny. If you are making wedding invitations, the foil lined envelopes are more than likely going to be a little too gaudy for an occasion like this. They are usually gold lined envelopes or silver lined envelopes. If you really hunt you could probably find something a bit nicer. Whatever you decide to do you should definitely buy a sample first.

If you are trying to find inner and outer envelope sets with liners you should go through a wedding invitation supply company because these are uncommon envelopes. You will most likely only be able to get them from companies that only supply envelopes or wedding invitation supply companies. It should be a lot easier for you to find lined inner envelopes

One thing you should keep in mind about lined envelopes is that they can cause problems if you intend to address them by hand. Whenever you are trying to hand address an envelope it is best to create a guide that can be slipped into the envelope so that you can make sure that the address is straight. Whenever you use lined envelopes, it is impossible to see through the envelope.

One work around for this would be to go ahead and create you guide on the computer and then use a pencil and ruler to draw over the lines. Then you would carefully press this face down onto the front of the envelope so that the pencil transfers to use as a guide. You should experiment with this first to make sure that you are able to easily remove the lines. I would suggest a Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser because in my experience they do a really good job. You should wait until the ink dries thoroughly before removing the pencil lines. Of course this method is going to be more time consuming, but if you must have lined envelopes and have them hand addressed as well it seems like your best option.

Lined Envelope Supplies

If you do not have a large amount of envelopes to create or you are just particularly fed up with the selection available and have plenty of time to kill you could make all of your own liners, this is really not difficult, it is just time consuming. All you need is:

  • Pretty paper for the Liners
  • The envelopes that you plan on using
  • A liner template (you can buy these online or you can print the template that I have on this page and print it on cardstock.)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Plenty of Time and Patience
  • May be a few friends

Lined Envelope Directions

The first thing you will need to do is to print out the template on some cardstock paper. This template is for a 5.25 x 7.25. You need to make sure that is is the right size when you print it. If you don’t have a printer you could bring it to Kinko’s or you could buy a plastic template online. The great thing about these is that they will last a long time.

  1. The next thing you will need to do is cut out the template.
  2. Then you should use a pencil to trace onto the paper that you are going to use to make the liner out of.
  3. Next cut out the liner from the paper. Try to cut inside of the line so that it will not show.
  4. Next you should use a very small amount of glue, preferably a glue stick, to stick the liner into the envelope. It would be best if you only use the glue on the flap portion of the envelope. This will prevent the paper from wrinkling or bubbling up.
  5. Now fold the envelope down. You should probably put a sticker on the point so that people will open the envelope by un-sticking the sticker. You wouldn’t want someone to tear through the top and miss seeing the liner!
  6. Envelope liners can definitely add a professionalism and beauty to an envelope and should definitely be considered if you are sending out invitations.
