The Linksys WRT54G wireless G broadband router is actually a three in one device for internet sharing. It has a 4-port switch and a wireless-G (802.11g) access point which lets you connect Wireless-B and Wireless-G devices to the network. It allows you to connect up to 4 computers directly or you can add more ports to create a very big network depending on what you need. The main function, the router, makes it possible to share high speed broadband, cable or DSL with very good wireless security of up to 128-bit WEP encryption, MAC address filtering or IP address filtering.

If you are concerned about protecting your data and privacy, it can encrypt all the wireless transmissions. The router can also act as a DHCP server and it also has NAT technology which can protect against internet intruders and other predators. With VPN pass-through support, this device can be easily configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. The Web browser-based configuration utility makes configuration a snap.

Wireless networks are quickly becoming more popular in homes and business and they have also become a lot cheaper. Since you don't need any cables, you can use your pc or laptop from anywhere you like as long as it is within range of the wireless router; even out in the garden. This router has a greater range actually. There's no need to buy and roll out Ethernet network cables to every room in your house or office. Outside the home and office, many broadband and internet providers are now making wireless networking available in hotspots at various popular locations such as coffee shops, airports, some residential areas and businesses. These facilities are great if you're on the road or when you are away from home or office. The three basic wireless networking standards to choose from are

802.11a
802.11b
802.11g

Wireless-G (802.11g) is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that can be more than 4 times faster than the commonly used Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in businesses, homes, and public wireless hotspots.  The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS broadband routers have been the most popular wireless routers devices and they continue to lead other router devices. After purchasing a Linksys WRT54G wireless G broadband router it's a good idea to update the firmware to make sure that you are using the best software available. Just go to their website and download the free software upgrade using your pc. The setup and operation manual will have all the information you need to achieve this. The latest firmware version usually fixes a lot of the reported issues from earlier versions.

Some of the things I noticed about the Linksys WRT54G wireless G broadband router are:

- It’s very easy to setup
- It has a great range
- All devices seamlessly interact with each other.
- I have not had any connection drops so far
- And the unit is a lot cooler than my previous router.

You may be able to get a free router by signing up for high speed DSL or broadband.
