Myspace. Bebo. Facebook. Xanga. Friendster. LinkedIn. The list of social networking sites is endless. There seems to be a site for every area of interest. How do you compile them into a list? Well, I’ve done my best. Granted, I’ve not listed every social networking site in the world, as a matter of fact, only English sites are listed. If you see one that should be added, please email me, and I’ll add it.
General NetworkingMySpace - MySpace is perhaps the best known social networking site in the world. Everyone from at least one of your friends, to major film studios, use MySpace. Your Place. Your Space.
Bolt - When most people think of social networking sites, Bolt isn’t the first that comes to mind. You may have never even heard about it. Bolt allows members to upload photos and video, which you can share with your friends (kind of like YouTube).
Friendster - Friendster was the most popular social networking site on the net, until MySpace bypassed it in 2004. Friendster was launched in 2002, and is privately owned to this day. Google offered $30 million for it in 2003, but its offer was turned down. Friendster is reliable, and a great place to hang.
hi5 - hi5 gets more and more popular by the day. With an estimated 50,000,000 members, you’re bound to find a friend amongst the bunch.
MyOpera - The social networking site for Opera users.
myYearbook - This is a favorite of mine. MyYearbook was created to keep high school friends in contact with each other. I like this site, because of its history. myYearbook was started by two high school, David and Catherine Cook, who originally operated the site for their friends. Eventually, Catherine persuaded a venture capitalist (and their older brother), to invest $250,000 in their project.
Today, the site has over 1.7 million members, and is used all around the world. It’s still owned by Catherine and David Cook.
Passado - A European networking site. I don’t have an account here, so I can’t really comment on it.
BusinessEcademy - Not so much a “social networking site” as a “networking site”. Wikipedia describes it as such:
"Ecademy is primarily a subscription-based network or contact organisation used for the building of business contacts between people, and also used to advertise products and services offered or wanted. It is also a social networking site, and runs some events around social gatherings."
LinkedIn - LinkedIn is my favorite business social networking site. You most likely already know about it, if not, here’s what LinkedIn says:
"LinkedIn is an online network of more than 11 million experienced professionals from around the world, representing 150 industries.
When you join, you create a profile that summarizes your professional accomplishments. Your profile helps you find and be found by former colleagues, clients, and partners. You can add more connections by inviting trusted contacts to join LinkedIn and connect to you.
Your network consists of your connections, your connections’ connections, and the people they know, linking you to thousands of qualified professionals."
Ryze - Another business social networking site. I don’t know much about it, but it looks like it’s worth a shot!
Xing - Again, this is not so much a “social networking” site, as serving as an potential employee database.
Travel & LifestyleaSmallWorld - Heh. aSmallWorld is the social networking site for the “elite”. You need to be invited by a current member, including members like Ivanka Trump, Tiger Woods, and Paris Hilton. Don’t get me wrong. If you are a current member, I’d very much appreciate an invite.
Care2 - The social website for green living and activism.
DontStayIn - A European social networking site, with an emphasis on clubbing.
Infield Parking - The social networking site for NASCAR fans.
Sportstvite - A social networking site for sports.
WAYN - A social networking site with the goal of uniting travelers across the globe.
TravellersPoint - A great social networking site for world travelers.
Photo SharingFlickr - The most popular photo sharing, and social networking, site. Owned by Yahoo!, you can bet it’s reliable.
FuPEI - Social networking site allowing you to share your favorite music, pictures, and videos.
Piczo - Piczo allows you to share videos, photos, your blog, and an online chat.
