The History of Liverpool Football Club
If Everton had not left Anfield in 1892 because of disputed rent then Liverpool Football Club would not exist. Evertons old club chairman John Houlding, a hand full of supporters and 3 first team players were left, but John was determined to form a new football team at Anfield and so began one of the most successful English Football teams in the World. In the next 117 years they would win the League 18 times, FA Cup 7 times, League Cup 7 times, European Cup 5 times and UEFA Cup 3 times.
It would take Liverpool 8 years to win their first of 18 League titles, it would not be until the season 1900/01, even then they would not win the League until the final game of the season against West Brom. It would take a lot longer for Liverpool to get to an FA Cup Final, it would not be until 1950 when they played Arsenal and were beaten 2-0, however they did eventually win the FA Cup 14 years later in the 1964-65 season.
In 1959 Liverpool appointed a new manager, Bill Shankly he would become a Liverpool Legend he Breezed through the gates of the old stadium like a breath of fresh air and set about revolutionising the training schedules, modernising the facilities and shaking up the playing staff. Fans would soon see and call Shankly the massiah. He transformed the way Liverpool played football, he turned them into a passing team which would dominate the league for years to come and although he changed alot of players and brought in players who would play his idea of the passing game, he did not change the backroom staff as he thought he already had a ready made "Boot Room".
Bill Shankly's idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility, so teams would be frightened to be playing Liverpool and this started by making Anfield into a Fortress of Invincibility. Before you go onto the pitch you go through the tunnel with the famous sign "This is Anfield". Bill Shankly revolutionized the way Liverpool played football and setup a backroom staff or "Boot Room" which would last into the 1990's.
For 75 years the FA Cup was absent from the trophy cabinet at Anfield but that all changed in 1965. The Final was against Leeds and would become part of Liverpool folklore. In the first 10 minutes Gerry Bryne Broke his Collarbone but carried on playing both teams were in deadlock and the first 90 minutes failed to produce a goal. In extra time both teams scored but then Ian st John Scored the winner in the 111 minute so Liverpool won 2-1. So in 1965 Liverpool won the FA Cup for the first time and the Liverbirds were still atop the Liver Building as it was said that the day Liverpool won the FA Cup the Birds would fly their Coop. In 1974 Shankly shocked Liverpool by anouncing his retirement.
Liverpool After Shankly
When Bill Shankly announced his retirement everyone wondered which big name would takeover Liverpool FC. Born out of a tradition which would last into the late 80's the next manager of Liverpool came from the "Boot Room". It was announced that Bob Paisley would takeover from Shankley, this quiet man from the north east never wanted to go into management but was persuaded to take control. Under his control Liverpool would win 6 league championships, 3 European Cups, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 European Super Cup and 5 Charity Shields.
If the 1965 FA Cup win was the greatest day in Liverpool history then the 1977 European Cup Final was the greatest night. After another campaign in Europe Liverpool would end 1977 with a Final against Borussia Moenchengladbach in Rome. That night the Liverpool supporters turned the Rome stadium into Anfield with an estimated 30,000 scousers in the stadium with red and white chequered flags urging on the Liverpool team another banner and the most eye-catching was a tribute to Joey Jones with referance to previous games is said Joey ate the Frogs' Legs, Made the Swiss roll, Nows he's Munching-Gladbach with such support their could only be one result and Liverpool won 3-1 and Emlyn Hughes would hold the trophy aloft.
Bob Paisley would bring players such as Phil Neal, Terry McDermott, Joey Jones, David Johnson, Ray Kennedy, David "Super Sub"Fairclough. Paisley, aware he was not the greatest orator, would say: "I let my side do the talking for me." It did with deafening volume thanks to a litany of Paisley recruits including Dalglish, Hansen, Souness, Alan Kennedy, Ronnie Whelan, Ian Rush, Craig Johnston, Mark Lawrenson, Bruce Grobbelaar and Steve Nicol. In 1983 he handed Control of Liverpool to the next "Boot Room" boy Joe Fagan.
In 1983 Joe Fagan took control of Liverpool FC he was promoted to manager from the "Boot Room" and although he would only be manager for 2 years, during this reign would complete the record treble of League, League Cup and European Cup in the season 1983/84. Fagan would retire at the end of his second season as a result of the terrible tragedy of Heysel, when after securing a place in a fifth European Cup Final and with a team tipped to win, crowd violence and a decaying and Inadequate stadium would cause the death of supporters. Fagan was deaply upset by the deaths and he retired.
Liverpools next manager would also come from in house and would become one of the most famous of all Liverpool legands. "King Kenny Dalglish". He joined Liverpool in 1977 as a player and with excellent ball skills and a great tactical footballing brain he would soon become a Kop favourite. In 1985 he took over the management of Liverpool and for the next 6 years would become very successful although not in europe due to Liverpool being banned for 5 years denying great teams of any european success. However they were very successful in England. Under Kenny they won 3 Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 1 Super Cup and 4 Charity Shields. He would leave Liverpool in 1991 2 years after the terrible events of Hillsborough which took so much out of this much loved Liverpool legend. He would still always be "King of the Kop".
The Hillsborough Memorial
The Hillborough Disaster
In 1989 on a bright summers day the worst Disaster in English Football occured, it would be in a semi-final of the FA Cup between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest being played at Hillsborough, by the end of the day 96 Liverpool fans would lose their lives and the face of English Football would change forever.
On 15th April 1989 25,000 Liverpool Supporters travelled to Hillsborough for the FA Cup semi-final with Notts forest. The Liverpool Supporters were allocated the smaller Leppings Lane end of the ground. As the time for kick off approach not all the fans were in the ground and instead of delaying the start of the match, a desasterous decision was made to open a gate and allow the crowd into the ground enmass, this could still have been fine if the gates to the central pen was closed so funneling the crowd around to the side pens, but this wasn't done so fans surged through the gates and most funnelled straight down the central tunnel to the already overcrowded central pen causing a crush.
Fans in the side pens and in the terraces above watched in horror as people were being crushed in the central pen, the fans at the front of the central pen pleaded with officials to open the gates and allow them out but fearing crowd violence their pleas were ignored. Other fans sensing the danger tried to pull fans up into the upper terraces to safety. Finally the crowd spilled onto the pitch at first reports said there was a pitch invasion but very soon it became clear that something terrible had happened and as fans started to pull down advertising hordings to carry the injured and dead onto the pitch for help, a disaster was in the making.
Players and match officials were taken off the pitch not knowing the full extent of the disaster, this they would only find out at a later date. At the end of the day 96 Liverpool fans would be dead. This year was the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough and the 96 and their familes are still awaiting Justice for the mistakes made on that terrible day.

Sent over from TKA; happy to help a fellow fan. :o)
I haven't followed the team too closely this year, but will always have a kind of kinship with it. I grew up playing soccer here in the states, but there wasn't much access to watching the pros (Soccer Made In Germany... anyone?) However, in my 20's I played and managed an amateur team along with a guy who grew up in the Liverpool system, played with the reserves, and actually got a full 90 minutes with the premiere side. He opted for university rather than the offer they gave him. Anyway, it's my 'claim to fame' via proxy. :o)
Is this a bad time to say GO BRONCOS! (sorry American here, and really is soccer a sport?)
I love Liverpool FC and we make the best ver fottball souvenire for Liverpool football fans. Have alook here - http://www.no1fan.co.uk
